Sleep deeper, wake calmer, move easier.
Restless nights or muscles that will not unwind? Did you know magnesium is involved in over 300 processes in your body, and many of us fall short? It may help support relaxation and sleep.
Magnesium is a mineral involved in more than 300 reactions in the body. It helps muscles relax, supports the nervous system and helps turn food into energy. Many Australians do not get enough from diet alone, since it is found mostly in nuts, seeds, leafy greens and wholegrains. Low intake may show up as muscle twitches, cramps, tiredness or trouble unwinding. Magnesium comes in several forms, and the form you choose changes how it is absorbed and how it feels.
Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it
Magnesium is a cofactor for enzymes that make ATP, the cell's energy currency. It also acts as a natural calcium blocker in muscle and nerve cells, helping them relax after contraction. Most magnesium is stored in bone, and only about one per cent circulates in the blood, so blood tests do not always show low stores.
Form matters. The mineral is bound to another molecule, which affects absorption and effect:
- Glycinate (bisglycinate): bound to the calming amino acid glycine. Gentle on the stomach and well absorbed. Popular for evening use.
- Citrate: well absorbed and draws water into the bowel, so it can loosen stools.
- Oxide: high in elemental magnesium but poorly absorbed. Mostly acts as a laxative.
- L-threonate: a form studied for raising magnesium in the brain. Often chosen for focus and sleep. Research is early.
- Malate: bound to malic acid, involved in energy production. Often chosen for daytime energy and muscle comfort.
- Chloride and flakes: used orally or in baths and foot soaks. Skin absorption is not well proven, but many people enjoy the relaxing ritual.
Absorption falls as the dose rises, so splitting doses works well. See the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheet and the NHMRC Nutrient Reference Values.

Common questions
What is the best form of magnesium?
It depends on your goal. Glycinate is gentle and good for relaxation, citrate is well absorbed and can help regularity, malate suits daytime energy, and L-threonate is studied for brain support.
When is the best time to take magnesium?
Many people take glycinate in the evening to wind down. Other forms can be taken any time, usually with food to avoid stomach upset.
Why does magnesium make me go to the toilet?
Unabsorbed magnesium draws water into the bowel. Oxide and citrate are most likely to do this. Glycinate is gentler.
Is magnesium oxide any good?
It has a lot of elemental magnesium but is poorly absorbed, so it is better suited as a gentle laxative than for topping up levels.
Do magnesium flakes or oils work through the skin?
Evidence for skin absorption is limited. Many people find a magnesium bath or foot soak relaxing in its own right.
How long does magnesium take to work?
Some people feel more relaxed within days. Muscle and sleep benefits often take two to four weeks of regular use.
Safety
Speak to your healthcare professional before use if you have kidney problems, take antibiotics, bisphosphonates, diuretics or heart medicines. Separate from some medicines by 2 hours. High doses may cause loose stools.
