The hive's own protective secret.

Ever wondered how bees protect their hive? Did you know propolis is a resinous substance bees make from tree buds to seal and defend their home? It may help support your immune system.

Woohoo Bee Propolis gives you 1000mg per serving. Each pack has 180 Softgels.

Propolis is the sticky, resin-like substance honey bees make from tree buds and sap, mixed with beeswax. Bees use it to seal and protect their hive, which is why it is sometimes called bee glue. People have used propolis since ancient times, and today it is popular as a tincture, lozenge, spray or capsule for throat comfort and general wellbeing, particularly through the cooler months.

Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it

Propolis is a complex natural mixture, typically around 50 per cent plant resin, 30 per cent wax, 10 per cent essential oils and 5 per cent pollen. Its makeup varies with the plants the bees visit. European and Australian propolis is rich in poplar-derived flavonoids (such as pinocembrin, galangin and chrysin) and phenolic acids like caffeic acid and CAPE (caffeic acid phenethyl ester). Brazilian green propolis is rich in artepillin C, from Baccharis shrubs.

Laboratory research shows propolis flavonoids and phenolic acids act as antioxidants, scavenging free radicals and influencing inflammatory signalling, including NF-kB. Propolis also has a long record of use on the bee hive itself, where it limits the growth of microbes. Whether those findings carry over to people is less clear.

Small human trials have looked at propolis sprays and lozenges for throat comfort, and at propolis mouth rinses for gum health, with generally positive but limited results (see Examine.com and the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health).

  • Extraction: propolis is poorly soluble in water, so alcohol or glycerine extracts are common.
  • Standardisation: good products state the flavonoid content, since quality varies by region and season.

Because propolis is a bee product, it can trigger reactions in people allergic to bees, bee stings, honey, or poplar and balsam of Peru.

Common questions

What is propolis?

Propolis is a resin that bees collect from trees and mix with wax to seal their hive. It is rich in plant flavonoids and phenolic acids.

What is propolis used for?

It is traditionally used for throat comfort, mouth and gum freshness, and general immune support. It is also used on skin.

Is propolis the same as honey or royal jelly?

No. Honey is the bees' food, royal jelly feeds queen larvae, and propolis is a protective resin.

How do you take propolis?

It is taken as a tincture, spray, lozenge or capsule. Follow the directions on your product.

Can I take propolis every day?

Many people take propolis during the cooler months or as a short course. Follow the label and take breaks.

Who should avoid propolis?

People allergic to bees, bee products, honey or poplar should avoid it. A patch test on your inner arm is a good first step.

Safety

Avoid if you are allergic to bee products, honey, poplar or balsam of Peru, and stop if you notice a rash, itching or throat tightness. Alcohol-based tinctures are not suitable for children, in pregnancy or for people avoiding alcohol. Check with a health professional if you take blood thinners.
