The science behind it

Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) root contains a group of compounds known as eleutherosides, including eleutheroside B (syringin) and E, plus polysaccharides, coumarins and flavonoids. These are quite different from the ginsenosides found in true ginseng.

Adaptogens. The term adaptogen was coined by Soviet scientists in the mid-20th century, partly through studies on eleuthero. An adaptogen is a substance thought to help the body maintain balance under physical or mental strain. Research in animals suggests eleuthero may influence the stress-response system, known as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and help the body cope with strain.

Human trials. Soviet-era studies reported improved stamina and work capacity, though the quality of those studies was variable. More recent small trials show mixed results for endurance. A trial in people with persistent tiredness found improvements in some measures of fatigue (Hartz et al., Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2004).

Use. Eleuthero is typically taken for several weeks, sometimes with a break. Standardised extracts provide a measured amount of eleutherosides.

It has a long tradition of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western herbal medicine as a tonic (Examine.com).
