Vitamin D Ultiboost Vitamin D, Swisse, 60 Caps

Soak up support when the sun is scarce.
Spending more time indoors than out? Did you know your body makes vitamin D from sunlight, but it is not always easy to get enough? It may help support bones, muscles and immune health.
Vitamin D Ultiboost Vitamin D from Swisse comes in a pack of 60 Caps.
Vitamin D is often called the sunshine vitamin because your skin makes it when exposed to UV light. Yet in Australia, many people still run low, especially in winter, if they cover up or spend most days indoors. Vitamin D works more like a hormone than a typical vitamin, helping your body absorb calcium for strong bones and teeth and supporting muscles and normal immune function.
Delivery: Ships from Australia. Usually arrives in 3 to 7 business days.

The science behind it
Vitamin D exists in two main forms. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is made in skin from 7-dehydrocholesterol when UVB rays hit it, and is also found in oily fish, eggs and liver. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) comes from plants and fungi. Both are inactive until converted by the liver into 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcidiol), the form measured in blood tests, and then by the kidneys into the active hormone calcitriol.
Calcitriol binds to the vitamin D receptor, found in cells throughout the body, and switches on genes that raise calcium absorption in the gut. This is why low vitamin D can mean weaker bones, and in more marked cases muscle weakness and bone pain. Vitamin D also influences immune cells and muscle function.
Key points:
- D3 vs D2: D3 appears more effective at raising blood levels (Tripkovic et al., 2012, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition).
- Fat-soluble: absorbed best with a meal that contains some fat.
- Pairing: vitamin K2 and magnesium are often taken alongside because they support calcium handling and vitamin D activation.
Risk of low levels is higher with darker skin, older age, covering clothing, limited sun and some medications. Because it is fat-soluble and stored in the body, very high intakes over time can build up, so stay within recommended amounts (see NIH Office of Dietary Supplements and the Australian Healthy Bones Australia guidance).

Common questions
What is vitamin D3?
Vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol, is the form your skin makes in sunlight. It is also the form commonly used in supplements.
How does vitamin D work?
It is converted in the body to an active hormone that helps the gut absorb calcium. It also supports muscle and immune function.
When is the best time to take vitamin D?
Take it with your largest meal, as the fat helps absorption. Time of day matters less than consistency.
D2 or D3: which form is best?
Studies suggest D3 raises blood levels more effectively than D2. D2 is usually used in vegan products, though vegan D3 from lichen is also available.
Can I get enough vitamin D from the sun?
Many people can in summer, but in winter, southern states or with limited sun exposure it can be hard. Always follow SunSmart sun protection advice.
Should I take vitamin K2 with vitamin D?
They work well together on calcium handling, and many people take them together. Check with your health professional, especially if you take warfarin.
Safety
Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so avoid taking more than recommended; very high doses can raise blood calcium. Speak to a health professional if you have a kidney condition, high blood calcium, or take thiazide diuretics or digoxin. A blood test can confirm your level.
