Keep muscles and fluid balance on track.
Muscles feeling twitchy after exercise or a hot day? Did you know potassium is an essential electrolyte that works with sodium to keep cells balanced? It may help support normal muscle function.
Potassium from Solgar comes in a pack of 250 Tabs.
Potassium is an essential mineral and electrolyte that every cell in your body needs. It helps nerves send signals, muscles contract and fluid stay in balance. Most Australians do not reach the recommended intake from food, as fruit, vegetables and legumes are the richest sources. Supplements can top up dietary intake, and they are often chosen for muscle comfort, hydration and general wellbeing.
Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it
Potassium is the main positively charged ion (cation) inside cells. Cells actively pump three sodium ions out and two potassium ions in, using an enzyme called the sodium-potassium ATPase. This creates the electrical gradient that allows nerves to fire and muscles to contract.
Balance with sodium. Sodium sits mostly outside cells and potassium inside, so the two work together to control fluid distribution and blood volume. Diets high in sodium and low in potassium are common, so improving the ratio is a common nutrition aim.
Absorption. Dietary potassium is absorbed very well, about 85 to 90 percent, in the small intestine. The kidneys then tightly regulate blood levels by adjusting how much is excreted in urine. Because the kidneys do this so effectively, healthy people rarely build up too much from food.
Forms. Supplements use potassium citrate, gluconate, chloride, bicarbonate or aspartate. Citrate and bicarbonate forms act on acid-base balance, while potassium chloride is the most concentrated. Over-the-counter potassium supplements in Australia are generally low in dose per tablet, because high-dose potassium can irritate the gut and affect heart rhythm (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).
Low levels may cause weakness, tiredness, cramps and constipation.
