Balanced hormones, steadier moods, calmer days.

Ever wondered how your cells hear the message to respond to insulin and hormones? Did you know your body makes inositol itself? It may help support hormonal balance, healthy cycles and mood.

No-Flush Niacin Vitamin B3 from Solgar gives you 500mg per serving. Each pack has 100 Veg Caps.

Inositol is a sugar-like compound found in every cell of your body and in everyday foods such as fruit, beans, grains and nuts. Your body makes it from glucose, and it plays a quiet but important part in how cells respond to signals from hormones and insulin. The two main forms are myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol. Many people choose inositol to support hormonal balance, healthy menstrual cycles, healthy glucose metabolism, and a sense of mood and calm.

Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

Benefits & common uses

Benefits

  • May help support hormonal balance in women.
  • May help support healthy menstrual cycles and regular ovulation.
  • May help support healthy glucose metabolism and normal insulin response.
  • May help support mood and a sense of calm.
  • Helps maintain healthy cell signalling, as inositol is a building block of the messengers inside your cells.
  • Traditionally used as part of a balanced nutrition plan to support overall metabolic wellbeing.

What people commonly use it for

  • Irregular or unpredictable menstrual cycles (Some clinical studies suggest it may help, although many trials are small)
  • Hormonal balance and everyday PMS-type symptoms (Early research only, with promising but limited results)
  • Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels after meals (Some clinical studies suggest a supportive effect on glucose metabolism)
  • Skin and hair changes linked to hormonal shifts (Early research only)
  • Low mood and mild everyday stress (Early research only, mostly using higher doses in small studies)
  • Cravings and appetite for sweet foods (Early research only, so individual results vary)

Suggested to use alongside

  • Folate (folic acid or methylfolate): Often taken alongside inositol in research and during preconception planning, as part of a balanced nutrition plan.
  • Magnesium: Supports healthy glucose metabolism, muscle relaxation and a sense of calm, complementing inositol's role in cell signalling.
  • Chromium: A trace mineral traditionally associated with healthy glucose metabolism and normal insulin function.

The science behind it

Inositol is a carbocyclic sugar alcohol with nine possible forms (isomers). Myo-inositol is by far the most abundant in the body. Your kidneys make several grams a day from glucose, and you also take in a little from food. Inositol is absorbed in the small intestine and taken into cells by dedicated transporters.

Inside cells, inositol is built into molecules called inositol phosphates and phosphatidylinositols. These act as second messengers. When insulin or follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) binds to its receptor on a cell surface, the message is passed on inside the cell by inositol-based messengers.

  • Myo-inositol is mainly linked with FSH signalling in the ovary and with glucose uptake.
  • D-chiro-inositol is made from myo-inositol by an enzyme called an epimerase, and is linked more with insulin-driven glucose storage and hormone production.

Different tissues keep different balances of the two. The ovary holds mostly myo-inositol, while tissues such as the liver hold more D-chiro. This is why researchers have studied combinations, especially a 40:1 myo to D-chiro ratio, which resembles the ratio found in healthy blood plasma (Nordio and Proietti, 2012, European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences).

Inositol is also found as phytic acid in grains and legumes. Safety reviews describe it as well tolerated at typical doses (Carlomagno and Unfer, 2011, European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences). Research is still developing, and results differ between people.

Common questions

What is inositol?

Inositol is a naturally occurring sugar-like compound found in your body and in foods such as fruit, beans, grains and nuts. It helps your cells respond to signals from hormones and insulin. It is sometimes called vitamin B8, although it is not a true vitamin because your body makes its own.

What is the difference between myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol?

They are two forms of the same molecule. Myo-inositol is the most common form in the body and is linked with FSH and glucose signalling. D-chiro-inositol is made from myo-inositol and is linked more with insulin-driven glucose storage. Some products combine them in a 40:1 ratio, based on the balance seen in healthy blood plasma.

What is the 40:1 ratio?

It means 40 parts myo-inositol to 1 part D-chiro-inositol. This is the approximate ratio found in the blood of healthy people, and it is the ratio used in a number of published studies. Whether it is better than myo-inositol alone is still being researched.

How long does inositol take to work?

Research trials usually run for three to six months before measuring changes in things like cycle regularity, so it is not a quick fix. Some people notice changes sooner and others notice little. Consistency matters, and it is worth chatting with your healthcare professional about what to expect.

When is the best time to take inositol?

Inositol powder or capsules are commonly taken once or twice a day, with or without food. Taking it with a meal may be gentler on your stomach. Studies often split the daily amount into a morning and an evening serve.

Does inositol have side effects?

At typical amounts it is generally well tolerated. Higher amounts can cause mild nausea, wind, loose stools or tummy discomfort. Starting with a lower serve and building up slowly can help.

Safety

Inositol is generally well tolerated, but talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning a pregnancy, or taking medicines such as blood glucose lowering medication or lithium. High amounts may cause digestive upset such as nausea, wind or loose stools. Not suitable for children unless advised by a health professional. Supplements should not replace a balanced diet or prescribed treatment.
