How it works
Folate (vitamin B9) is a water-soluble B vitamin needed to make DNA and to divide cells, which is why it matters so much for tissues that renew quickly, such as red blood cells. It also helps the body process homocysteine and makes the amino acid methionine, which supports methylation reactions throughout the body.
Natural folate in leafy greens, legumes and citrus is absorbed in the small intestine. Folic acid is the synthetic form used in supplements and fortified foods; it is more stable and well absorbed but must be converted by the liver into the active form, 5-MTHF (methylfolate). Some people have a gene variant (MTHFR) that reduces this conversion, so some supplements use methylfolate directly. Adequate folate before and during early pregnancy is recommended in Australia to support normal fetal development (see NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, Folate fact sheet).
What people use it for
- Helps support normal red blood cell formation
- Helps maintain healthy folate levels when dietary intake is inadequate
- Helps support normal cell division and growth
- Helps support maternal folate levels when taken before and during early pregnancy
- Helps support healthy homocysteine metabolism
Common questions
What is the difference between folic acid and folate?
Folate is the natural form found in food. Folic acid is the synthetic form used in supplements and fortified foods. Methylfolate is the active form your body uses, and some people prefer it for that reason.
Should I take folate before getting pregnant?
Australian health guidelines recommend women planning a pregnancy take folate from at least one month before conception through the first three months. Speak with your doctor about the right amount for you.
Safety
High amounts of folate can hide the signs of vitamin B12 deficiency, so check your B12 status if you are over 50 or follow a plant-based diet. Speak to your healthcare professional if you take anticonvulsant or methotrexate medicines.
