Antioxidant power for body and cells.

Looking to support your body's natural antioxidant defences? Did you know alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing compound your body makes in small amounts? It may help support healthy glucose metabolism and energy.

Alpha Lipoic Acid from Solgar gives you 200mg per serving. Each pack has 50 Caps.

Alpha-lipoic acid, often shortened to ALA, is a sulfur-containing compound made naturally in small amounts by the body. It acts as a helper molecule in the mitochondria, the tiny power stations in our cells that turn food into energy. It is also unusual among antioxidants because it works in both water and fat. Small amounts are found in spinach, broccoli and red meat, and supplements are widely used for energy metabolism and antioxidant support.

Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

Benefits

  • Provides antioxidant support that helps the body manage everyday oxidative stress.
  • May help support healthy glucose metabolism.
  • May help support normal energy production in cells.
  • May help support healthy nerve function.
  • May help support healthy skin ageing as part of a balanced diet.
  • Helps regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E.

What people commonly use it for

  • Everyday tiredness (Early research only)
  • Tingling and numbness in feet and hands (Some clinical studies suggest benefit at higher doses)
  • Healthy blood sugar levels after meals (Some clinical studies suggest benefit)
  • Skin looking tired or dull (Early research only)
  • General antioxidant needs with ageing (Some clinical studies suggest benefit)

Suggested to use alongside

  • Vitamin E: Antioxidant vitamin
  • CoQ10: Nutrient involved in cellular energy
  • B complex: Supports energy metabolism

The science behind it

Alpha-lipoic acid (also called thioctic acid) is a short fatty acid with two sulfur atoms. Inside mitochondria it serves as a cofactor for enzyme complexes, such as pyruvate dehydrogenase and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, which are needed to turn carbohydrates into energy. The body makes only a small amount, and this naturally declines with age.

As a supplement, ALA and its reduced form, dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA), work as a redox pair. They neutralise reactive oxygen species and regenerate vitamin C, vitamin E and glutathione. ALA also appears to chelate (bind) some metal ions in laboratory systems, and it may switch on the Nrf2 pathway, which raises the body's own antioxidant enzymes. Some research suggests ALA may improve insulin signalling by encouraging glucose transporters (GLUT4) to move to the cell surface.

Forms. ALA exists in two mirror-image forms. R-lipoic acid is the natural form and is more bioactive. The racemic (R/S) mixture is cheaper. Absorption is best on an empty stomach, as food reduces peak levels by about a third, although it is also taken with food to avoid upset.

Clinical trials of intravenous and oral ALA, such as the ALADIN and SYDNEY studies, have been used to examine nerve comfort, and a systematic review by Mijnhout et al. (2012) summarised them.

Common questions

What is alpha-lipoic acid?

It is a natural antioxidant that your body makes and that is also found in some foods. It helps cells produce energy and works in both water and fat.

What is the difference between R-lipoic acid and alpha-lipoic acid?

Standard alpha-lipoic acid is a mix of R and S forms. R-lipoic acid is the natural form and is thought to be more active, but it costs more.

When is the best time to take alpha-lipoic acid?

It is absorbed best on an empty stomach, about 30 minutes before a meal. If it upsets your stomach, take it with food.

How long does alpha-lipoic acid take to work?

Studies usually last four weeks to several months. Expect gradual changes.

Is alpha-lipoic acid the same as alpha-linolenic acid?

No. Both are abbreviated ALA, but alpha-linolenic acid is an omega-3 fat from flaxseed and chia. Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulfur-containing antioxidant.

Can I take alpha-lipoic acid with other antioxidants?

Yes, it is commonly combined with vitamins C and E, CoQ10 and acetyl-L-carnitine.

Safety

May lower blood glucose, so people taking medicines for blood sugar should monitor levels and speak to their healthcare professional. May affect thyroid hormone medicine action. Possible side effects include nausea, rash and skin itching. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless advised. Biotin absorption may be affected at high doses.
