Silky, nourishing oil for skin that stays soft.

Skin tight and dry by mid-afternoon? Did you know plant carrier oils help seal in moisture and leave skin feeling soft and smooth? A little goes a long way, so why not try it tonight.

Skin naturally makes its own oils to keep moisture in and the outside world out. When that balance slips, skin can feel dry, rough or tight. Plant-based carrier oils such as jojoba, argan, rosehip and marula are rich in fatty acids and antioxidants that look after the skin surface. They are used on their own, blended with essential oils, or smoothed over damp skin to lock in softness.

Delivery: Usually arrives within 3 days to 2 weeks.

What people commonly use it for

  • Dry, tight skin (Some studies suggest plant oils help skin hydration and comfort)
  • Rough elbows, heels and body skin (Traditional use, and easy to see the effect)
  • The look of fine lines and dullness (Early research only, mostly on antioxidant-rich oils)

  • Shea butter: Adds richness to help soften dry skin
  • Lavender essential oil: Adds a calming scent when blended into a carrier oil

The science behind it

The outer layer of skin, the stratum corneum, works like a brick wall. The skin cells are the bricks, and lipids such as ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids are the mortar. Dry skin often has less of this mortar, so water escapes more easily (a process called transepidermal water loss).

Carrier oils supply fatty acids that can top up this barrier. Different oils behave differently:

  • Jojoba is technically a liquid wax ester, very close to the skin's own sebum, so it feels light and non-greasy.
  • Argan is rich in oleic and linoleic acids plus tocopherols (vitamin E).
  • Rosehip contains linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids and small amounts of natural carotenoids.
  • Marula is high in oleic acid and absorbs quickly.

Oils mainly work by forming a thin film that slows water loss and by softening the surface. They are most effective when applied to slightly damp skin, since they seal in the moisture already there.

Cold-pressed, unrefined oils keep more of their natural antioxidants. Oils that are high in linoleic acid can go off faster, so cool, dark storage helps (Examine.com and published reviews on plant oils and skin barrier function).

Common questions

What is a carrier oil?

A carrier oil is a plant oil used to moisturise skin or to dilute essential oils so they can be applied safely. Jojoba, argan and sweet almond are common examples.

Which oil is best for dry skin?

Argan and marula are rich and nourishing, while jojoba suits those who prefer a lighter feel. The best oil is the one your skin likes.

How do I use body oil?

Smooth a few drops over damp skin after a shower, then massage in. A little goes a long way.

Can I use body oil on my face?

Many people do, especially light oils like jojoba and rosehip. Start with a small amount and check how your skin responds.

Will oils make my skin greasy?

Not if you use a small amount. Jojoba and marula absorb quickly, while heavier oils may suit nights or very dry areas.

How should I store natural oils?

Keep them in a cool, dark place with the lid closed. Most are best used within 12 months of opening.

Safety

Do a patch test on the inner forearm before first use, especially if you have nut allergies, as almond, argan and marula oils come from nuts or kernels. Do not apply to broken skin. Keep essential oil blends well diluted and away from the eyes.
