How it works
A herbal salve or balm is made by steeping dried herbs in a carrier oil, such as olive or sunflower oil, so the oil absorbs the plant's fat-soluble compounds. This infused oil is then thickened with beeswax or a plant wax to make a soft, spreadable ointment.
The wax and oil work as an occlusive barrier. They sit on the outer layer of the skin (the stratum corneum) and slow the loss of water from the surface. This helps dry, rough areas such as hands, elbows, heels and lips feel smoother and softer. The oils also act as emollients, filling small gaps between skin cells.
The botanical content depends on the herbs used. Calendula, plantain, comfrey leaf and chamomile have long been used in traditional herbal skin care. Because a salve contains almost no water, it does not need many preservatives and usually keeps well when stored somewhere cool and dark.
What people use it for
- Moisturises and softens dry, rough skin.
- Helps protect the skin's surface from drying out in cold or windy weather.
- Nourishes hands, elbows, heels and lips.
- Infused with herbs traditionally used in skin care.
- A little goes a long way, so a small amount gives long-lasting comfort.
Common questions
What is the difference between a salve and a balm?
The two words are often used interchangeably. Generally, a salve is a herbal oil thickened with wax for everyday skin care, while a balm may be firmer or include butters. Check the ingredient list to see what you are getting.
How do I use a herbal salve?
Warm a small amount between your fingertips until it melts, then massage it into clean, dry skin. Reapply as needed, especially after washing your hands. Store it in a cool place so it stays firm.
Safety
For external use only. Do not apply to broken or weeping skin. Patch test first, especially if you are allergic to bees' products or plants in the daisy family. Stop use if irritation occurs.
