How it works

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a spiny plant whose seeds contain a group of flavonolignans collectively known as silymarin. The main active is silybin. Silymarin is fat-soluble and not especially well absorbed on its own, which is why many extracts are standardised or combined with phospholipids to improve uptake.

In the body, silymarin is concentrated in the liver, where it acts as an antioxidant and helps protect liver cell membranes from oxidative stress. It also influences some of the pathways liver cells use to process everyday compounds. Milk thistle has a long history of use in Western herbal medicine as a liver tonic and digestive aid (see the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health monograph on milk thistle). Seed extracts are usually taken with food, and effects build gradually with regular use.

What people use it for

  • Traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to support liver function
  • May help support healthy liver function
  • Traditionally used in Western herbal medicine as a digestive aid
  • May help support the body's natural antioxidant defences
  • Traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to help relieve indigestion

Common questions

How long does milk thistle take to work?

It depends on the person and the reason you are taking it. Herbal extracts like milk thistle tend to work gradually, so most people give it several weeks of consistent daily use before judging. Taking it with food can help.

Can I take milk thistle every day?

Many people take it daily as part of a regular routine, following the directions on the label. If you take regular medicines or have ongoing health concerns, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Safety

Milk thistle belongs to the daisy family, so avoid it if you are allergic to ragweed, daisies or similar plants. It may interact with some medicines processed by the liver. Speak to your healthcare professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking prescription medication.
