How it works

Turmeric is a golden spice from the root of Curcuma longa. Its main active compounds are the curcuminoids, led by curcumin, which gives turmeric its colour. In laboratory studies, curcumin interacts with several signalling pathways involved in the body's normal inflammatory response, including NF-kB, and has antioxidant activity. The challenge is that curcumin is poorly absorbed: it dissolves badly in water, is broken down quickly in the gut and liver, and is cleared fast. For this reason, supplements use strategies to improve uptake, such as piperine from black pepper, which slows the liver's breakdown of curcumin, or formulations that combine curcumin with phospholipids, fats or specialised carriers. A whole turmeric root powder contains curcumin at much lower levels than a standardised extract. Turmeric has a long tradition of use in Ayurvedic and Western herbal medicine (Nelson et al., 2017, Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, on curcumin bioavailability).

What people use it for

Common questions

Why is black pepper often added to turmeric?

Black pepper contains piperine, which slows how fast the liver breaks down curcumin. This can help more curcumin reach your bloodstream. Some products use other absorption-enhancing methods instead.

When should I take turmeric?

Take it with a meal that includes some fat, as curcumin is fat-soluble and absorbs better this way. Splitting the dose across the day can be easier on the stomach.

Safety

Turmeric supplements may interact with blood-thinning medicines and some other medications, and may not suit people with gallstones or bile duct problems. Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or having surgery.
