Nature's first food, in a scoop.

Curious about nature's first food? Did you know colostrum is the first milk produced after birth, thick, golden and naturally rich in proteins and immune factors? It may help support gut and immune health.

Colostrum from Nutricost gives you 500mg per serving. Each pack has 120 Caps.

Colostrum is the first milk produced by mammals in the hours and days after giving birth. It is thick, golden and packed with proteins, growth factors and antibodies that help a newborn thrive. Supplements are made from bovine colostrum collected from cows after their calves have had their share, and then gently dried into a powder or capsule. People take it to support gut comfort, everyday resilience and recovery from exercise.

The science behind it

Colostrum differs from mature milk in having far more protein and far fewer carbohydrates and fats. Its key components are immunoglobulins (mainly IgG in cows), lactoferrin, proline-rich polypeptides, and growth factors such as IGF-1, TGF-beta and EGF.

Immunoglobulins in bovine colostrum are partly resistant to digestion. They may remain active in the gut, where they can bind to unwanted microbes and help maintain a healthy balance in the gut. Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein with roles in the gut and immune function. The growth factors are thought to support the turnover of cells lining the gut, which is the main rationale for its use in gut comfort.

Studies in athletes are among the best known. A systematic review (Jones et al., Sports Medicine, 2016) found that bovine colostrum taken for several weeks reduced gut permeability markers during hard exercise and may support the upper airways in athletes. Results are strongest for doses of 20 grams a day or more over at least four weeks, though effects vary.

Quality notes. Heat can damage the proteins, so low-temperature processing is preferred. Colostrum is not the same as human colostrum, and bovine growth factors are present in very small amounts. Because it is a dairy product, it contains milk proteins and some lactose.

Common questions

What is colostrum?

Colostrum is the nutrient-rich first milk produced after birth. Supplements use bovine colostrum collected from dairy cows.

What is colostrum good for?

It is used to support immune function, gut health and exercise recovery. It provides immunoglobulins, lactoferrin and growth factors.

How do you take colostrum?

Colostrum comes as a powder or capsule. Powder can be mixed into cool drinks, yoghurt or smoothies, as heat can damage proteins.

When is the best time to take colostrum?

Many people take it in the morning on an empty stomach, so it reaches the gut quickly. It can also be taken with food if it upsets you.

How long does colostrum take to work?

Studies generally run for four to twelve weeks.

Is colostrum safe if I am lactose intolerant?

It has less lactose than standard milk, so some people tolerate it, but it is still a dairy product. Start with a small amount.

Safety

Contains milk proteins and some lactose, so avoid if you have a cow's milk allergy and take care if you are lactose intolerant. Speak to your healthcare professional before use if you take immune-modulating medicines or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Mild bloating or nausea can occur.
