How it works

Tea tree oil is the essential oil steam distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a plant native to eastern Australia. Its main aromatic component is terpinen-4-ol, together with smaller amounts of gamma-terpinene and 1,8-cineole. Australian Standard AS 2782 sets the typical composition for quality oil.

Terpinen-4-ol is a lipophilic (fat-loving) molecule, so it moves easily through the oily layer of the skin surface. This is why tea tree is a popular ingredient in face washes, shampoos and spot treatments, where it is used for its cleansing action and fresh, medicinal scent.

Indigenous Australians have long used Melaleuca leaves, and the oil became widely known during the twentieth century. Because the oil is strong, it is used in low concentrations in cosmetics or diluted in a carrier oil. Over time, oxidised oil can irritate skin, so storage in a cool, dark place with the lid on tight is important.

What people use it for

  • Helps cleanse the skin and leave it feeling fresh.
  • Adds a clean, refreshing scent to face washes, soaps and shampoos.
  • Used in cosmetic products for oily or blemish-prone looking skin.
  • Helps cleanse the scalp when used in shampoo.
  • Freshens the air as part of an aromatherapy blend.

Common questions

Can I put tea tree oil directly on my skin?

It is better to dilute it. Undiluted oil can cause redness and dryness, especially on the face. Mixing a few drops in a carrier oil or using a product formulated with it is gentler.

Is tea tree oil safe for pets?

Tea tree oil can be harmful to cats and dogs, even when diffused or applied to their coats. Keep it well away from pets and talk to your vet if there is any contact.

Safety

For external use only. Do not swallow. Always dilute, patch test first, avoid eyes and keep away from children and pets. Stop use if skin irritation occurs.
