The science behind it

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil is dominated by linalool and linalyl acetate, which together make up more than half the oil. Both are small, fat-soluble molecules. When inhaled, they reach the brain quickly through the nasal lining and the olfactory pathways, and when swallowed they are absorbed from the gut.

Laboratory research suggests linalool may modulate GABA-A receptors, the main calming signalling system in the brain, and may reduce excitatory glutamate activity. It also appears to affect voltage-gated calcium channels, which could explain why lavender is described as calming without making people strongly drowsy. Linalyl acetate has been studied for effects on the autonomic nervous system, such as heart rate and skin conductance.

Several clinical trials have used a standardised oral lavender oil capsule and reported improvements in self-rated tension and sleep quality over several weeks. Aromatherapy studies are more variable, partly because it is hard to blind participants to a scent. Trials of a standardised oral lavender oil (Kasper et al., 2010) are often cited. Other lavender species, such as Lavandula x intermedia (lavandin), have more camphor and are not equivalent.

Quality matters. Look for products naming the Latin species and the part used. Essential oils should never be swallowed unless they are made for oral use.

Lavender is traditionally used to promote relaxation, ease mild stress and support restful sleep. It is also used in skincare for its soothing scent.

Does lavender help you sleep?

Some studies suggest that lavender aromatherapy and standardised oral extracts may help with occasional sleeplessness. It is gentle and works best as part of a good bedtime routine.

How do you use lavender oil?

Diffuse a few drops, add to a warm bath diluted in a carrier oil, or apply diluted to the skin. Only swallow lavender oil if it is a product made for oral use.

Can I drink lavender tea?

Yes, lavender flowers make a pleasant tea. Use culinary or tea-grade flowers, one teaspoon steeped in hot water for about five minutes.

How long does lavender take to work?

Scent can feel calming within minutes. Oral extracts in studies were taken for two to ten weeks before benefits were measured.

Is lavender safe for children and pets?

Lavender products for babies and children should be checked with a health professional. Essential oils can be harmful to cats and dogs, so keep diffusers away from pets.

Safety

Dilute essential oil before applying to the skin and patch test first. Oral lavender can cause nausea, burping or headache in some people, and may add to the drowsy effect of sedative medicines and alcohol.
