NAC Supports, 600mg, 90 Count
$43.50
Support your body's natural antioxidant power.
Want to look after your body's natural antioxidant defences? Did you know NAC is a stable form of the amino acid cysteine, which your body uses to make glutathione? It may be worth a try.
NAC Supports gives you 600mg per serving. Each pack has 90 Count.
N-acetyl cysteine, or NAC, is a stable form of the amino acid cysteine. Your body uses cysteine to make glutathione, one of its key antioxidants. Dietary cysteine can be limited, so NAC is a popular way to help keep this pathway topped up. NAC has also been used for decades to support healthy mucus in the airways, which is why many people reach for it during the cooler months.
Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it
NAC is the N-acetyl derivative of the amino acid L-cysteine. Cysteine contains a sulfur-based thiol group, which makes it highly reactive and a valuable antioxidant. However, free cysteine is unstable and less well absorbed, so NAC is used as a more reliable source.
Glutathione precursor. Cysteine is usually the rate-limiting building block for glutathione, a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine. Once absorbed, NAC is deacetylated to cysteine, which cells then use to make glutathione. In this way NAC supports the antioxidant systems in the liver, lungs and other tissues (NIH-referenced reviews and Examine.com).
Mucus. NAC can break the disulfide bonds that link mucin proteins, making mucus thinner and easier to clear. This mucolytic action is why it has long been used in respiratory care in many countries.
Direct antioxidant action. The thiol group can also neutralise some free radicals directly, though the effect through glutathione is thought to be more important.
Oral NAC has relatively low bioavailability, around 5 to 10 percent, but this is enough to raise cysteine and glutathione in tissues. It has a distinct sulfur smell, which is normal.

Common questions
What is NAC used for?
NAC is used to support glutathione production, antioxidant defences and healthy mucus in the airways.
How does NAC work?
Your body turns NAC into cysteine, which is a building block for glutathione. It also helps thin mucus.
Why does NAC smell like sulfur?
NAC contains sulfur, like garlic and eggs. The smell is normal and does not mean it has gone off.
When should I take NAC?
Some people prefer to take it with food to reduce stomach upset. Follow your product label.
How long does NAC take to work?
Mucus effects can be felt within days. Antioxidant benefits build over several weeks.
Is NAC the same as glutathione?
No. NAC is a precursor that helps your body make glutathione. Both may be used together or separately.
Safety
NAC may cause nausea or stomach upset in some people. Speak to your health professional before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, asthmatic or taking nitroglycerin, blood thinners or other regular medication.
