    How it works

    NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) is a modified form of the amino acid cysteine. Cysteine is the limiting building block for glutathione, one of the body's most important antioxidants. Adding an acetyl group makes NAC more stable and better absorbed than plain cysteine.

    After absorption in the small intestine, NAC is quickly converted into cysteine in the liver and other tissues, where it helps the body make glutathione. This supports the liver's normal handling of everyday compounds and the cells' defence against oxidative stress. NAC also has a free sulfur-containing group (a thiol) that can break the bonds in mucus proteins, which is why it is used as a mucus thinner in the lungs and is available in medicine form in hospitals (see NIH Office of Dietary Supplements and published reviews on N-acetyl cysteine). It is also used by the body in amino acid metabolism.
