A sweet, soothing herb with centuries of tradition.

Ever wondered why licorice root is so loved in herbal traditions? Did you know it contains glycyrrhizin, roughly 50 times sweeter than sugar? Discover this classic herb for yourself.

Licorice root has been valued in Western herbal medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. Its natural sweetness comes from glycyrrhizin, a compound about 50 times sweeter than sugar. As well as flavouring, the root has a long tradition of use for soothing the throat and digestive tract. Modern supplements may use the whole root, or a deglycyrrhizinated (DGL) form.

The science behind it

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) contains glycyrrhizin, flavonoids such as liquiritin and isoliquiritigenin, and mucilage-like polysaccharides. Each plays a different part in how the herb works.

Glycyrrhizin and its effects. Glycyrrhizin is converted in the gut to glycyrrhetinic acid, which inhibits an enzyme called 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2. This enzyme normally breaks down cortisol in the kidney. When it is blocked, cortisol remains active for longer and can mimic aldosterone, causing the body to hold on to sodium and lose potassium. This is why high intakes of licorice can raise blood pressure and why whole-root products have dose limits.

DGL. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice has most of the glycyrrhizin removed. It is generally used for digestive comfort and is chewed or taken before meals, so it can coat the stomach lining and support the natural mucus barrier.

Throat and cough. The polysaccharides and flavonoids have a soothing action on mucous membranes. A small study of a licorice gargle before surgery found less sore throat afterwards (Agarwal et al., Anaesthesia, 2012).

Licorice is traditionally used in Western herbal medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine as a harmonising herb in formulas.

Common questions

What is licorice root good for?

It is traditionally used to soothe the throat and digestive tract. Some people also use it during times of fatigue.

What is DGL licorice?

DGL is licorice with most of the glycyrrhizin removed. It is mainly used for stomach and digestive comfort and is gentler for regular use.

Is licorice the same as the lollies?

Not quite. Real licorice confectionery contains the root, but many lollies are only aniseed flavoured. Herbal products use more measured amounts of the root.

How long can I take licorice root?

Whole-root licorice is usually used for short periods only. DGL has fewer limits, but follow your product label.

When should I take DGL licorice?

It is usually chewed or taken 20 to 30 minutes before meals. This lets it coat the stomach lining.

Can I drink licorice tea every day?

Occasional cups are fine for most people, but large daily amounts are best avoided. Keep it moderate and see the safety note.

Safety

Whole-root licorice can raise blood pressure and lower potassium with high or prolonged intakes. Avoid it in pregnancy, and ask your health professional first if you take blood pressure medication, diuretics, digoxin or corticosteroids. DGL has most of this risk removed.
