An ancient aromatic with a place in history.
Love a warm, woody scent? Did you know frankincense is a tree resin that has been prized for thousands of years in ceremonies and skincare? Experience this ancient aroma in your routine.
Frankincense is the fragrant resin tapped from Boswellia trees growing in arid parts of Africa, Arabia and India. It has been burned as incense and used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Boswellia extracts are taken to support comfortable, flexible joints, while the essential oil is prized in aromatherapy and skincare for its warm, woody scent. The resin contains natural compounds called boswellic acids.

The science behind it
The resin of Boswellia species (Boswellia serrata in India and B. carterii or sacra in Arabia and Africa) is made of essential oil, gum and resin acids. The key active compounds are pentacyclic triterpenes called boswellic acids, especially acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA).
How it works. Boswellic acids have been shown in laboratory research to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme that produces leukotrienes, which are signalling molecules involved in the body's inflammatory responses. They also affect other pathways such as NF-kB. Small clinical trials report that standardised Boswellia serrata extracts may ease joint discomfort and improve movement.
Absorption. Boswellic acids are poorly water soluble, so absorption is low. Taking them with a fatty meal improves uptake, and some modern extracts use phospholipid complexes or other delivery systems to enhance absorption. AKBA is absorbed less well than its non-keto counterparts, so extracts differ in practice (Examine.com).
Oil versus extract. The essential oil, made by steam distillation, contains mainly volatile terpenes such as alpha-pinene and limonene. It contains little boswellic acid, so it is used for scent, massage and skincare, not for joint extracts. Frankincense essential oil should be diluted and not swallowed unless a product says it is intended for internal use.

Common questions
What is frankincense used for?
The resin extract is traditionally used for joint comfort, while the essential oil is used in aromatherapy and skincare.
What is the difference between frankincense and Boswellia?
Frankincense is the resin from Boswellia trees. Supplements often call it Boswellia, and the oil is called frankincense.
When is the best time to take Boswellia?
Take it with a meal, ideally containing some fat, for better absorption.
How long does frankincense take to work?
Studies on joint comfort generally run 4 to 12 weeks, though some people notice changes sooner.
Can I use frankincense oil on my skin?
Yes, when diluted in a carrier oil. Patch test on a small area first.
Is frankincense oil safe to swallow?
Not unless the product is specifically made for internal use. Most essential oils should not be ingested.
Safety
Boswellia may cause mild stomach upset and may interact with anti-inflammatory and blood-thinning medicines. Seek advice if pregnant or breastfeeding. Essential oil should always be diluted, patch tested and kept away from eyes and children.
