How it works
Sea moss, most often Irish moss (Chondrus crispus) or Gracilaria, is a red seaweed that grows on rocky Atlantic and Caribbean coasts. It has been eaten and used traditionally for generations, often prepared as a gel.
Sea moss is a source of minerals such as iodine, magnesium, calcium and potassium, though amounts vary with the species and where it grew. It also contains carrageenan and other sulfated polysaccharides, which are soluble fibre-like compounds that form a gel in water. In the gut, these fibres are not digested by human enzymes and instead support stool bulk and feed gut bacteria. The mineral content is absorbed in the small intestine like minerals from other foods. Because the iodine content is variable and can be high, intake should be moderate (see NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, Iodine fact sheet).
What people use it for
- May help support general wellbeing as a source of minerals and trace elements
- Traditionally used as a nourishing food
- May help support healthy digestion as a source of soluble fibre
- May help support thyroid function as a source of dietary iodine
- May help support healthy skin when used topically, as a moisturising and soothing ingredient
Common questions
What does sea moss taste like?
Raw sea moss has a mild, slightly oceanic flavour, and gel made from it is usually quite neutral. It is often blended into smoothies, tea or soups so the taste is hardly noticeable.
Can I take sea moss every day?
Many people use it daily in small amounts. Because it contains iodine, which can vary a lot between products, it is best not to overdo it, especially if you also take kelp or iodine supplements.
Safety
Sea moss contains iodine, so check with your healthcare professional before use if you have a thyroid condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding. It may have a mild blood-thinning effect, so take care if you use anticoagulants. Avoid if you are allergic to seaweed or seafood.
