Plump, dewy, hydrated-looking skin.

Skin looking dull or dry? Did you know hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water? It may help support skin hydration and a plump, smooth appearance.

Hyaluronic acid is a clear, gel-like substance your body makes naturally. It is found in skin, joints and the eyes, where it helps hold water and keep tissues cushioned and supple. Our natural levels fall with age, which is one reason skin can start to look drier and less plump. Hyaluronic acid is used in two main ways: as a capsule or liquid taken by mouth, and as a serum or cream applied to the skin.

Delivery: Usually arrives within 3 days to 2 weeks.

The science behind it

Hyaluronic acid (also called hyaluronan) is a long chain sugar molecule, a type of glycosaminoglycan. One gram can hold up to around six litres of water, which is why it is so valued for hydration. In skin it sits in the dermis, supporting volume and elasticity. In joints it is a key part of synovial fluid, which lubricates and cushions.

Your body continuously makes and breaks down hyaluronic acid. The turnover in skin is rapid, often within a day or two, and production slows with age and sun exposure.

Molecular weight matters

  • High molecular weight forms sit on the skin surface and form a hydrating film.
  • Low molecular weight and oligo forms are small enough to penetrate further into the skin.
  • In oral products, low molecular weight hyaluronic acid is generally better absorbed, and small chains may be taken up through the gut.

Oral studies, mostly small and short, have reported improvements in skin hydration after around 8 to 12 weeks. Topical use reliably increases surface hydration but works on the outer layers. Pairing hyaluronic acid with vitamin C and a daily sunscreen is a common routine. See Examine.com for an evidence summary.

Common questions

What does hyaluronic acid do for skin?

It binds water, so it helps skin feel hydrated, soft and plump. Topical products work on the surface, and oral forms are being studied for hydration from within.

Does oral hyaluronic acid work?

Some small clinical studies suggest improved skin hydration after a couple of months. More research is needed, and results vary.

When should I apply hyaluronic acid serum?

Apply to slightly damp skin, then seal it in with a moisturiser. This stops the serum from drawing water away from the skin in very dry air.

Can I use hyaluronic acid with vitamin C or retinol?

Yes. It is gentle and pairs well with most actives. Introduce new products one at a time.

How long does hyaluronic acid take to work?

Topical products can make skin feel more hydrated straight away. Oral products are usually trialled for 8 to 12 weeks.

Is hyaluronic acid vegan?

Most modern hyaluronic acid is made by bacterial fermentation, so it is often vegan. Older sources used rooster combs, so check the label.

Safety

Generally well tolerated. Patch test topical products first. Speak to your healthcare professional before oral use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking blood thinning medicines.
