Gentle liquid iron with B vitamins and herbs, in a fruity tonic. Floradix Floravital Liquid Iron Plus is the yeast-free, gluten-free version of the famous Floradix formula. It combines ferrous gluconate with vitamins B1, B2, B6 and B12, herbal extracts and fruit juice concentrates. It supports iron levels in the body when dietary intake is inadequate, and helps maintain vitality, energy and general wellbeing.

Why liquid iron? How iron works in the body

About two-thirds of your body's iron sits inside haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to every cell. Iron is also part of the enzymes your mitochondria use to turn food into energy, which is why low iron so often shows up as tiredness (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, Iron Fact Sheet). Your body stores spare iron as ferritin, mostly in the liver, which is the number your GP checks on a blood test.

  • Ferrous gluconate: iron in its ferrous (Fe²⁺) form, the form your gut absorbs most easily through a transporter called DMT1. Gluconate is a gentle salt, and many people find it easier on the stomach than high-dose iron tablets.
  • Vitamin C (from ascorbic acid and fruit juices): helps keep iron in its absorbable ferrous form and can markedly increase non-haem iron absorption (Hallberg, Brune & Rossander, 1989, International Journal for Vitamin and Nutrition Research).
  • B vitamins (B1, B2, B6, B12): B2 helps the body use iron, B6 is needed to build haem, and B12 is needed to make healthy red blood cells.
  • Herbs and fruit: caraway, hibiscus, chamomile and spinach extracts plus grape, pear, blackcurrant, cherry, blackberry, rosehip and carrot juice concentrates give it a naturally pleasant flavour.

Liquid iron or iron tablets: which is better?

It depends on your needs. High-dose iron tablets give much more iron per dose, which a doctor may recommend if your levels are low. A gentle liquid like Floravital gives a smaller, steady amount with B vitamins, suits people who struggle to swallow tablets or find stronger iron hard on the stomach, and is easy to take daily. It's not intended to treat iron deficiency, so if you think your iron may be low, ask your GP for a blood test first.

Tip: what you drink matters

Tea and coffee contain polyphenols that bind iron and can reduce absorption from a meal by more than half. Take your iron about 30 minutes before a meal, and leave an hour or so before your cuppa.
