Dark berry, deep tradition.

Want to be prepared for winter? Did you know elderberries are a deep purple fruit used in European herbal tradition for centuries and rich in anthocyanins? They may help support immune health.

Elderberry is the dark purple berry of the European elder tree, Sambucus nigra. Its fruit has been used in folk traditions across Europe for generations, often as a warming syrup during the colder months. The berries are packed with deep-coloured plant pigments called anthocyanins, along with vitamin C. Today elderberry is a popular pantry staple for families who like to support their body's natural defences through winter. It is usually taken as a syrup, gummy, capsule or lozenge.

The science behind it

Elderberries are rich in anthocyanins (such as cyanidin-3-glucoside), flavonoids like quercetin and rutin, and phenolic acids. These compounds give the fruit its deep colour and strong antioxidant activity in laboratory tests. Some are absorbed in small amounts and also reach the gut, where bacteria transform them into smaller phenolic metabolites.

Research suggests elderberry extract may influence immune signalling, including cytokines that coordinate the body's response when you feel unwell. Most of this work has been in cell studies, with fewer human trials.

In a small randomised trial (Zakay-Rones and colleagues, 2004, Journal of International Medical Research), a standardised elderberry syrup was associated with faster recovery from flu-like symptoms. A 2019 review of travellers also reported fewer symptom days with elderberry. These studies were small, so findings should be treated as promising, not definitive.

Important points about forms:

  • Cooked or processed berry extracts are used in supplements. Raw berries, leaves, bark and seeds contain cyanogenic compounds and can cause nausea, so they should never be eaten unprocessed.
  • Elderflower is a different part of the plant, traditionally used in teas for mild congestion and fevers.

Elderberry is not an essential nutrient, so there is no deficiency. It is used for its plant compounds.

Common questions

What is elderberry good for?

It is traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to help relieve symptoms of colds and flu. It also provides antioxidants from its dark pigments.

When should I take elderberry?

Many people start at the first sign of feeling run down and continue for several days. Others use it through winter. Follow the label directions.

Can I eat raw elderberries?

No. Raw berries, leaves and stems contain compounds that can cause nausea and vomiting. Cooking or processing makes the fruit safe, which is why supplements use prepared extracts.

Can children take elderberry?

Some products are made for children, but you should check the label and talk to your health professional first.

How long does elderberry take to work?

Studies on cold symptoms usually look at use over 5 to 7 days. For general wellbeing, people take it daily through the colder months.

Is elderberry the same as elderflower?

No. Elderberry is the fruit, elderflower is the blossom. They contain different compounds and are used in different ways.

Safety

Never eat raw or unprocessed elderberries, leaves or bark. Elderberry may interact with immunosuppressant medicines, and may affect diuretics or laxatives. Seek advice if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have an autoimmune condition.
