How it works
Traditional soap is made by saponification. Fats or oils, such as olive, coconut or palm-free vegetable oils, react with an alkali (sodium hydroxide) to form soap and glycerin. No alkali remains once the process is complete and the bar has cured.
Soap molecules have two ends. One end is attracted to water and the other is attracted to oil. When you wash, the oil-loving ends grab onto dirt and sebum on your skin while the water-loving ends allow it to rinse away. This process is called emulsification, and it is how soap cleanses.

Soap is slightly alkaline, around pH 9 to 10, while skin is slightly acidic, so rinsing well and moisturising afterwards suits those with dry skin.
