How it works
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like compound made in nearly every cell of the body. It sits in the inner membrane of the mitochondria, the cell's power stations, where it carries electrons in the electron transport chain to help produce ATP, the main energy currency of cells. It also acts as a fat-soluble antioxidant, protecting cell membranes and recycling vitamin E. Tissues with high energy demand, such as the heart, liver and muscles, contain the most. Your body's production peaks in early adulthood and declines with age, and statin medicines can lower levels because they share a production pathway. CoQ10 comes in two forms: ubiquinone, the oxidised form, and ubiquinol, the reduced, active form. The body converts one to the other, but ubiquinol may be absorbed more easily, especially in older adults. Because it is fat-soluble, take it with a meal containing fat (Mayo Clinic and NIH reviews on CoQ10).
What people use it for
- Provides antioxidant support
- May help support cellular energy production
- May help support healthy heart muscle function as part of a healthy lifestyle
- May help support physical stamina and reduce fatigue
- May help support muscle comfort for people taking certain medicines, as advised by a healthcare professional
- Helps maintain normal CoQ10 levels, which decline with age
Common questions
What is the difference between ubiquinone and ubiquinol?
Ubiquinone is the oxidised form and ubiquinol is the active, reduced form. Your body can convert between them, but ubiquinol may be absorbed better, particularly as you get older. Both work as CoQ10 supplements.
When should I take CoQ10?
Take it with a meal that includes some fat, since it is fat-soluble. Many people take it in the morning or at lunch, because some find it slightly energising and prefer not to take it late in the day.
Safety
CoQ10 may interact with blood thinners such as warfarin and may affect blood pressure medicines. Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you take regular medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have an upcoming surgery.
