A fine black powder with many traditional uses.
Curious about that black powder? Did you know activated charcoal is made from carbon-rich materials heated to create an extremely porous surface? It may help with occasional bloating or wind. Use as directed.
Activated charcoal is a fine black powder made from natural materials such as coconut shells or wood. It is heated to very high temperatures, which creates millions of tiny pores and gives it an enormous surface area. This makes it highly absorbent. People have used charcoal for generations to ease occasional digestive discomfort such as wind and bloating after a heavy meal. It is also used in some oral care and skincare products for its gentle absorbing and polishing qualities.
Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it
Activated charcoal is made by heating carbon-rich materials in a low-oxygen environment, then treating them with steam or acid at around 600 to 900 degrees Celsius. This creates a highly porous structure, with surface areas of 500 to 3000 square metres per gram. Substances stick to this surface through a process called adsorption, where molecules bind to the outside of the charcoal rather than being soaked up inside.
Charcoal is not absorbed by the body. It passes through the gut unchanged and leaves in the stool, which will turn black. While in the gut, it can bind gas molecules and certain chemicals, which is the basis of its traditional use for wind and bloating. A few small studies have looked at it for gas, with mixed results (Examine.com).
Charcoal is not selective. It can bind helpful things as well, such as vitamins, minerals and medicines, which is why timing matters.
- Coconut shell charcoal: a common source with fine pores.
- Wood or bamboo charcoal: other sources with similar actions.
For topical and oral care products, charcoal is used for its mild abrasive and absorbing qualities, which is a cosmetic effect. Charcoal is not a nutrient, so there is no deficiency state.

Common questions
What is activated charcoal?
It is a fine black powder made by heating carbon-rich materials such as coconut shells, creating a very porous, absorbent surface.
What is activated charcoal used for?
Traditionally, it is used to help ease occasional wind and bloating. It is also used in some cosmetic products.
When should I take activated charcoal?
Take it away from food, supplements and medicines, ideally at least 2 hours before or after, because it can bind to them.
Will charcoal turn my stool black?
Yes. This is normal and harmless, because charcoal passes through the gut unchanged.
Can I take charcoal every day?
It is generally intended for short-term, occasional use. Regular use may reduce the absorption of nutrients.
Is charcoal toothpaste good for whitening?
Charcoal can polish away surface stains, but it is abrasive and may wear enamel if used too often. Ask your dentist for advice.
Safety
Activated charcoal can reduce the absorption of medicines, including the contraceptive pill, so take it at least 2 hours apart. It may cause constipation or black stools. Not for use with bowel obstruction. Always seek urgent medical help in cases of poisoning or overdose rather than self-treating.
