Support for stronger-looking hair and nails.

Hair thinning or nails that keep breaking? Did you know biotin is a B vitamin your body needs to metabolise fats and carbohydrates? It may help support healthy hair, skin and nails.

Body Essentials Silicea Colloidal comes in a pack of 30 Caps.

Biotin, also called vitamin B7, is a water-soluble B vitamin that your body uses every day to turn food into usable energy. It also plays a part in the normal function of skin, hair and nails, which is why it is so popular in beauty routines. Because it is water-soluble, you need a regular supply from food or supplements. Eggs, nuts, seeds and legumes are good dietary sources.

Delivery: Ships from Australia. Usually arrives in 3 to 7 business days.

The science behind it

Biotin acts as a coenzyme for five carboxylase enzymes. These enzymes help your body build and break down fatty acids, glucose and some amino acids. In plain terms, biotin helps your cells handle the fuel you eat.

Keratin, the protein that makes up hair and nails, is built from amino acids, and biotin-dependent enzymes take part in the pathways that supply them. That is the logical link between biotin and hair and nail health. Most people get enough from a varied diet, so true deficiency is uncommon. Signs of a shortfall can include thinning hair, a scaly rash around the face and brittle nails (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).

Some things raise the odds of a low intake:

  • Regularly eating many raw egg whites, which contain avidin, a protein that binds biotin
  • Long-term use of some anticonvulsant medicines
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding, when needs rise

Biotin is absorbed in the small intestine and any excess is passed in urine. Gut bacteria also make some biotin, although how much your body uses is still being studied. Supplement doses are often far higher than food provides. Studies of hair and nails are generally small, so results vary from person to person. Hair grows slowly, so any change usually takes around three months to notice.

Importantly, high-dose biotin can interfere with some laboratory blood tests, a point covered in the safety note below.

Common questions

What is biotin good for?

Biotin helps your body turn food into energy and supports the normal function of skin, hair and nails. It is most useful when your diet falls short.

How long does biotin take to work for hair?

Hair grows about a centimetre a month, so most people allow at least three months. Results vary and are more likely when intake was low to begin with.

Is biotin the same as vitamin B7?

Yes. Biotin, vitamin B7 and vitamin H are names for the same nutrient.

When is the best time to take biotin?

Any time that suits you. Taking it with a meal can be gentler on the stomach, and consistency matters more than timing.

Can I get enough biotin from food?

Most people can. Eggs (cooked), nuts, seeds, salmon, sweet potato and legumes all contain biotin.

Can I take biotin with other supplements?

Biotin is commonly combined with zinc, vitamin C and other B vitamins. If you take medicines regularly, check with your pharmacist first.

Safety

High-dose biotin can interfere with some pathology blood tests, including some heart and hormone tests, and may give misleading results. Tell your doctor and pathology provider that you take it, and ask whether to pause beforehand. Speak with your health professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medicines.
