How it works
Probiotics are live microorganisms, most often Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species, that may provide a benefit when taken in adequate amounts. Your gut is home to trillions of microbes, and these friendly species help break down fibre, make short-chain fatty acids that feed the cells lining the bowel, and compete with less helpful microbes for space and nutrients. They also communicate with the gut's immune tissue and nerve network. Effects are strain-specific, which means a benefit shown for one named strain cannot be assumed for another. Probiotics generally do not settle permanently in the gut. They pass through while you take them, so regular use is needed to keep their presence up. Survival through stomach acid depends on the strain and the capsule or delivery system. Prebiotic fibres, such as inulin, feed beneficial bacteria and are sometimes combined with probiotics (World Health Organization and FAO definition of probiotics).

Common questions
When is the best time to take a probiotic?
It depends on the product, so follow the label. Many are taken with or just before a meal, because food can help buffer stomach acid. Consistency matters more than the exact time.
How long does it take for probiotics to work?
Some people notice a change within a week or two, while others need a month or more. Because they do not stay in the gut permanently, they work best when taken daily as part of a diet rich in fibre and varied plant foods.
Safety
Mild gas or bloating can occur in the first few days. People who are severely unwell or have a weakened immune system should speak to a healthcare professional before use. If you take antibiotics, separate the doses by a couple of hours.
