How it works
Berberine is a bright yellow alkaloid found in the roots and bark of plants such as barberry (Berberis vulgaris), goldenseal and Oregon grape. It has a long history in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, particularly for digestive complaints.
Berberine is poorly absorbed, with only a small portion entering the bloodstream, so much of it acts within the gut and interacts with gut bacteria. Inside cells, it activates an enzyme called AMPK, often described as the cell's energy sensor. AMPK helps regulate how cells use glucose and fats, which is why berberine has attracted interest for metabolic health. It also has antimicrobial properties that are likely to influence the gut microbiome. Because it affects some liver enzymes (CYP450 family), it can alter how certain medicines are processed (see NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health on berberine).

Common questions
When is the best time to take berberine?
Berberine is usually taken with or just before meals, as this can reduce stomach upset and suits how it works with food. It is often split into smaller amounts through the day because it is cleared from the body fairly quickly.
What are the common side effects of berberine?
Some people notice loose stools, cramping, gas or nausea, especially when starting. Beginning with a low amount and taking it with food usually helps. Stop use and seek advice if symptoms persist.
Safety
Do not use berberine in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and do not give it to infants or young children. It may interact with many medicines, including those for blood sugar, blood pressure, and drugs processed by the liver. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use.
