Deep red, dynamic support for active days.

Want a better workout? Did you know beetroot is naturally rich in dietary nitrates that your body can convert to nitric oxide? It may help support stamina and healthy circulation.

Beetroot is the deep ruby-red root vegetable that stains your chopping board and your fingers. It is naturally rich in dietary nitrates, which the body converts to nitric oxide, a molecule that helps blood vessels relax. Athletes and active people use beetroot to support stamina and circulation. It also provides betalains, the pigments that give beetroot its colour, as well as folate, potassium and fibre.

The science behind it

Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) is one of the richest food sources of inorganic nitrate. After you swallow nitrate, bacteria on the tongue convert it to nitrite. In the stomach and blood, nitrite is then converted to nitric oxide (NO), a signalling molecule that relaxes the smooth muscle in blood vessel walls.

This nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide pathway supports blood flow and may reduce the oxygen cost of exercise. A review of trials found that nitrate supplementation can modestly improve time to exhaustion in some people (Jones, Sports Medicine, 2014). Benefits appear greater in recreational athletes than in elite ones.

Betalains. Betanin and other betalains give beetroot its red colour. These pigments have antioxidant properties in laboratory studies, and they are the reason urine or stools can look pink or red after eating beetroot, which is called beeturia and is harmless.

Forms and timing. Beetroot is available as juice, powder or capsules. Powders and juices tend to supply more nitrate than capsules. Nitrate levels peak in blood at about 2 to 3 hours after a dose, so athletes often take it 2 to 3 hours before training.

Mouthwash warning. Antibacterial mouthwash can reduce oral bacteria and limit nitrate conversion, so avoid using it close to your dose (NIH and Examine.com).
