How it works
Aloe vera is a succulent whose thick leaves store a clear gel inside. This gel is around 99 per cent water, along with polysaccharides such as acemannan, small amounts of amino acids, vitamins C and E, and minerals. The yellow latex just under the leaf skin is different and contains anthraquinones, which are not part of a skin gel.
On the skin, the water content hydrates and cools, while the polysaccharides are humectants that bind water to the surface. The gel dries to leave a light, non-greasy film, so skin feels soft and comfortable. This is why aloe is a favourite after-sun and everyday moisturising ingredient.
Aloe vera has a long history in traditional medicine systems and Western herbal practice. In cosmetics it is valued for its soothing feel and its light texture. The quality of a gel depends on how it is processed, because heat and air can break down its polysaccharides.
What people use it for
- Hydrates and soothes dry skin.
- Provides a cooling, refreshing feel after time in the sun.
- Leaves skin feeling soft and smooth with a light, non-greasy finish.
- Traditionally used in skin care for its soothing qualities.
- A lightweight moisturiser for face, body and hair.
Common questions
Can I use aloe vera gel on my face every day?
Many people use it daily as a light moisturiser, and it suits oily or combination skin well. Dry skin may need a cream on top. As with any new product, try it on a small area first.
Is aloe vera gel safe after sun exposure?
Aloe gel feels cooling and comfortable on sun-exposed skin. It is not a substitute for sun protection, so keep using sunscreen, shade and covering clothing.
Safety
For external use unless the label says otherwise. Patch test first, as some people are sensitive to aloe. Avoid broken skin and eyes, and see a health professional before using on deep burns or blistered skin.
