Strong foundations for your bones, for life.

Want to look after your bones for the long run? Did you know calcium is the most abundant mineral in your body, with about 99 per cent stored in bones and teeth? Top up when dietary intake is inadequate.

Bio Calcium Biocalcium Water comes in a pack of 120 Caps.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body, and about 99 per cent of it is stored in your bones and teeth. The rest circulates in the blood, where it helps muscles contract, nerves send signals and blood clot normally. Because the body cannot make calcium, it must come from food or supplements. Dairy foods, canned fish with bones, tofu and leafy greens are good sources, but some people struggle to reach their daily needs from diet alone.

Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

  • Vitamin D: Needed for normal calcium absorption
  • Magnesium: Works with calcium for bone and muscle function
  • Vitamin K: Involved in normal bone metabolism

The science behind it

Calcium is absorbed mainly in the small intestine, through both an active, vitamin D-dependent pathway and a passive pathway that takes over at higher intakes. Absorption is best from smaller amounts at a time, usually 500 mg or less per dose, which is why supplements are often split across the day (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).

Forms matter. Calcium carbonate contains the most elemental calcium by weight and needs stomach acid, so it is best taken with food. Calcium citrate is absorbed well with or without food and suits people with low stomach acid. Other forms include calcium malate, lactate and gluconate, which have lower elemental content per tablet.

Partners in the process. Vitamin D lifts calcium absorption. Vitamin K2 and magnesium work alongside calcium in bone metabolism. Very high intakes of fibre, oxalates in spinach and phytates in some grains can bind calcium and reduce how much you absorb.

The body keeps blood calcium tightly controlled using parathyroid hormone. If dietary intake is low, it draws on the skeleton, which is why steady intake across life matters. Low intake over time may show up as weaker bones, and low levels in the blood can contribute to muscle cramps or tingling. Total intake from food and supplements should stay within recommended upper limits.

Common questions

What is the best form of calcium to take?

Calcium citrate absorbs well on an empty or full stomach, while calcium carbonate is cheaper and higher in elemental calcium but is best taken with food. The best form is the one you will take consistently.

When is the best time to take calcium?

Take it with meals if it is calcium carbonate, and split larger daily amounts into two doses. Many people prefer taking it in the evening, but any consistent time works.

Should I take calcium with vitamin D?

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, so the two are often paired. Many calcium products include vitamin D for this reason.

Can I take calcium and magnesium together?

Yes, they are often combined and work together in muscles and bones. Very large amounts at once may compete for absorption, so a balanced combination or spacing doses is sensible.

Does calcium cause constipation?

It can in some people, especially calcium carbonate. Drinking plenty of water, eating fibre or switching to calcium citrate often helps.

How much calcium do adults need each day?

In Australia the recommended dietary intake for most adults is around 1,000 mg a day, rising to 1,300 mg for women over 50 and men over 70. Count what you get from food first, then top up only the gap.

Safety

Do not exceed the recommended dose. Calcium can interfere with the absorption of some medicines, including thyroid hormone, certain antibiotics and iron, so space doses apart. Speak to your healthcare professional if you have a history of kidney stones, take heart medicines or are pregnant.
