Tropical softness for skin, hair and kitchen.
Love the smell of coconut? Did you know coconut oil is pressed from the flesh of the coconut, solid at room temperature and melting the moment it touches skin? Smooth it on for soft, nourished skin.
Coconut oil is a pale, solid-at-room-temperature fat pressed from the flesh of the coconut. Virgin coconut oil keeps a gentle tropical aroma, while refined coconut oil is neutral. In the kitchen it is used for cooking, baking and spreading. It is also a popular skin and hair moisturiser, makeup remover and massage oil. Its unique fats, including lauric acid and medium-chain triglycerides, give it a distinctive character in both food and skincare.

The science behind it
Coconut oil is about 90 per cent saturated fat, a very high proportion for a plant oil. Roughly half is lauric acid (C12), with smaller amounts of myristic, palmitic, caprylic (C8) and capric (C10) acids. The shorter fatty acids are known as medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). Unlike long-chain fats, MCTs travel directly to the liver via the portal vein and are rapidly turned into energy or ketones. Lauric acid is a long-chain-like intermediate and behaves partly like each group.
Because coconut oil is mostly saturated, it is solid below about 24 degrees Celsius and resists oxidation, so it keeps well. Virgin oil is cold-pressed or made from fresh coconut and retains small amounts of polyphenols. Refined oil is deodorised and suits higher-heat cooking, with a smoke point around 175 degrees for virgin oil and higher for refined. Australian dietary guidelines advise limiting saturated fat, so coconut oil is best used in moderation, as part of varied fats.
On skin and hair. Coconut oil forms an occlusive layer that slows water loss from the skin's surface. A randomised trial (Evangelista et al., 2014, International Journal of Dermatology) found it improved skin hydration in dry skin. On hair, lauric acid's small, straight shape lets it penetrate the hair shaft, and research (Rele and Mohile, Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2003) showed it reduced protein loss from hair when used before washing. It can be comedogenic, so those with oily skin should use it with care.

Common questions
Is coconut oil good for cooking?
Yes, it suits baking, stir-fries and curries. Virgin oil has a coconut flavour, while refined oil is neutral. As it is high in saturated fat, use it in moderation alongside other oils.
What is the difference between virgin and refined coconut oil?
Virgin coconut oil is made from fresh coconut with minimal processing and tastes of coconut. Refined oil is deodorised, has no flavour and handles higher heat.
Is coconut oil good for your skin?
It is an effective moisturiser for dry skin, particularly on the body. Because it can block pores, many people avoid putting it on an oily or breakout-prone face.
How do you use coconut oil on hair?
Warm a small amount in your hands and work through the lengths, leaving for 30 minutes or overnight before shampooing. Use sparingly on fine hair.
What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is a traditional practice of swishing a spoonful of oil in the mouth for several minutes. It is not a replacement for brushing and flossing.
Where should I store coconut oil?
Keep it in a cool, dark cupboard with the lid on. It melts above about 24 degrees Celsius, which is normal and does not affect quality.
Safety
Coconut is a tree nut under some labelling rules, though true coconut allergy is uncommon, so avoid if you are allergic. Coconut oil is high in saturated fat, so use in moderation in food. Patch test before applying to skin or hair, and avoid using it as a lubricant with latex condoms, as oils can weaken latex.
