Mineral from the volcano's edge.

Curious about minerals shaped by volcanoes? Did you know zeolite is a group of porous volcanic minerals formed when ash meets seawater? Explore this fascinating natural mineral and how it is traditionally used.

Zeolite is a group of porous volcanic minerals formed when volcanic ash reacts with seawater over thousands of years. The best known type in supplements is clinoptilolite. Its honeycomb-like structure gives it a very high surface area and an ability to exchange small charged particles, which is why it has found uses in water filters, pet care and gardening. Supplement-grade zeolite is finely milled and sold as powder, capsules or liquid.

Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it

Zeolites are aluminosilicate minerals, made of silicon, aluminium and oxygen arranged in a rigid, cage-like lattice. Clinoptilolite is the most studied natural type.

The lattice carries a negative charge that is balanced by loose positive ions such as sodium, potassium and calcium. These can be swapped with other ions in the surrounding environment. This property is called ion exchange and is the basis of zeolite's industrial use in water softening and filtering.

In the human body, zeolite is not absorbed in any meaningful amount. It passes through the gut, where its behaviour depends on the surrounding conditions. Scientific interest has focused on its use as a feed additive in animals, in water treatment and in cosmetics. Human studies are few, small and often involve specially prepared or processed forms, so conclusions are limited. Supplement marketing sometimes goes beyond what the research shows, so claims should be treated with caution.

Quality matters. Natural zeolite can contain trace elements from the rock itself. Look for products that are tested for purity and that list the type of zeolite and the particle size. Micronised forms are fine enough to blend and swallow easily.

Silica. Clinoptilolite contains silica, a trace mineral thought to take part in connective tissue health. How much silica is absorbed from zeolite is not well established.

Zeolite is best considered a mineral supplement with limited research, rather than a proven health aid.

Common questions

What is zeolite?

Zeolite is a natural volcanic mineral with a porous, cage-like structure. Clinoptilolite is the type most often used in supplements.

What is clinoptilolite?

It is the most common natural zeolite. It is formed from volcanic ash and is mostly silicon, aluminium and oxygen.

How do I take zeolite?

Follow the label. Powder is usually mixed into water and drunk with extra fluids, and capsules are taken with a glass of water.

Is zeolite absorbed by the body?

Very little. The mineral structure is largely stable and passes through the digestive tract.

What are the side effects of zeolite?

Some people notice constipation, bloating or mild stomach upset. Drinking plenty of water can help.

Does the research support zeolite supplements?

Research in humans is limited and early. It is best viewed as a mineral supplement rather than a proven health aid.

Safety

Zeolite can reduce the absorption of some medicines and minerals, so take it at least two hours apart from other supplements and medicines. Drink plenty of water to avoid constipation. Not recommended in pregnancy, breastfeeding or for children without health professional advice.
