Ultimate Mushrooms Blend comes in a pack of 50 Caps.

Mushrooms have been valued in traditional Chinese, Japanese and Siberian medicine for thousands of years. Species such as reishi, chaga, maitake, cordyceps, lion's mane and turkey tail are prized as functional mushrooms. They are not eaten like button mushrooms but taken as powders, extracts or teas. People use them to support daily vitality, balance and resilience, and they are rich in unique fibres called beta-glucans.

The science behind it

Functional mushrooms contain a distinctive mix of bioactive compounds. The most studied are beta-glucans, a type of soluble fibre in the cell walls of fungi. In the gut, beta-glucans interact with receptors on immune cells (such as Dectin-1 and complement receptor 3), which is how they are thought to help modulate normal immune responses. They also feed beneficial gut bacteria.

Each mushroom has its own specialty compounds:

  • Reishi: triterpenoids called ganoderic acids, traditionally used for calm and rest.
  • Lion's mane: hericenones and erinacines, studied for their effect on nerve growth factor in laboratory work.
  • Cordyceps: cordycepin and adenosine-like compounds, linked with energy and exercise capacity.
  • Chaga: melanin and polyphenols with strong antioxidant activity in the test tube.
  • Maitake and turkey tail: beta-glucans and protein-bound polysaccharides.

Preparation matters. The cell walls are made of chitin, which humans digest poorly, so hot water or dual (water and alcohol) extraction is used to release the active compounds. Look for products made from the fruiting body, which holds the active compounds, rather than only mycelium grown on grain, which contains a lot of leftover starch.

Human research exists for some species, with small trials of cordyceps in exercise and lion's mane in cognition, but overall evidence is early and varied (see Examine.com and the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health).

Common questions

What are medicinal mushrooms?

They are fungi, such as reishi, chaga and lion's mane, that have a long history in traditional medicine. They are usually taken as extracts, powders or teas.

What are beta-glucans?

Beta-glucans are fibres in mushroom cell walls that interact with immune cells in the gut. They are the main reason mushrooms are linked with immune support.

Which mushroom is best for energy?

Cordyceps is the traditional choice for energy and stamina. Reishi is more often used in the evening for relaxation.

Fruiting body or mycelium: which is better?

Fruiting body extracts generally contain more of the beneficial compounds, such as beta-glucans. Mycelium-on-grain products can contain a lot of starch.

Can I take mushroom supplements every day?

Many people take them daily for a few months at a time. Follow the directions on your product.

How long do medicinal mushrooms take to work?

Their effects are subtle. Most people give them four to eight weeks of consistent use.

Safety

Avoid if you are allergic to mushrooms or moulds. Some species (such as reishi and maitake) may affect blood clotting, blood sugar or immune medicines, and chaga is high in oxalates, so check with a health professional if you take medication or have kidney concerns. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless advised.
