The science behind it

Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) contains a group of bitter compounds called quassinoids, with eurycomanone as the key marker. It also contains alkaloids, and glycoproteins sometimes called eurypeptides. Water-based, standardised root extracts are the best studied in humans.

Hormone balance. Research suggests tongkat ali may influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and reduce the binding of testosterone to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). This could increase the proportion of free, active testosterone. Several small trials in stressed or ageing men have found improvements in hormone balance and mood.

Stress response. In a trial of stressed adults, 200 mg daily of a standardised extract for four weeks lowered cortisol (the stress hormone) and improved tension and mood scores (Talbott et al., Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2013).

Absorption. Quassinoids are absorbed reasonably well, and the body clears them within hours, which is why extracts are taken daily. Quality varies widely, and it is useful to look for products with a standardised eurycomanone or glycosaponin content.

Studies are generally small, so more research is needed (Examine.com). Traditionally the root was boiled in water, which is why water-based extracts are the most studied form today.
