Australia's own fresh-scented native.

Want a fresh, clean feeling? Did you know tea tree is a native Australian plant whose leaves were used by the Bundjalung people long before it reached shelves worldwide? Add a drop to your skincare routine.

Tea tree oil comes from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a paperbark tree native to Australia. The Bundjalung people of northern New South Wales have long crushed the leaves for use on skin. Today the oil is a staple of Australian bathrooms and is used in cosmetics such as washes, shampoos, soaps and spot gels. It has a fresh, medicinal, camphor-like scent. It is a strong essential oil, so it is used diluted and on the outside of the body only.

Delivery: Usually arrives within 3 days to 2 weeks.

The science behind it

Tea tree oil is a complex mix of more than a hundred compounds. The most important is terpinen-4-ol, which gives the oil most of its activity. The Australian and international standard (ISO 4730) requires terpinen-4-ol to be at least 30 per cent and limits another compound, 1,8-cineole, to 15 per cent or less because high cineole is more irritating.

In laboratory studies, terpinen-4-ol disrupts the membranes of many microbes and also has a calming effect on skin cells in culture. This is the reason tea tree is found in products for oily and blemish-prone skin and for dandruff-prone scalps. Human trials have been small to moderate in size. A 1990 Australian trial (Bassett and colleagues, Medical Journal of Australia) compared 5 per cent tea tree oil gel with benzoyl peroxide for blemishes, finding both helped, with fewer side effects from tea tree. A shampoo trial (Satchell and colleagues, 2002, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology) reported improved scalp flaking.

Using it well:

  • Dilute pure oil in a carrier oil or use a ready-made product.
  • Store in a dark bottle, away from heat and air. Oxidised oil is more likely to irritate skin.
  • Always patch test first.

Common questions

What is tea tree oil used for?

In cosmetics it is used to cleanse and freshen oily skin, the scalp and feet. It is a common ingredient in washes, shampoos and spot gels.

Can I put tea tree oil directly on my skin?

Pure oil can irritate, so most people dilute it. A common starting point is a few drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil. Patch test first.

Is tea tree oil safe to swallow?

No. It is for external use only and can be toxic if swallowed.

Is tea tree oil safe for pets?

It can be harmful to cats and dogs, even when applied to the skin. Keep products and diffusers away from pets.

Why is tea tree oil Australian?

Melaleuca alternifolia grows naturally in the wetlands of northern New South Wales and south-east Queensland, and commercial production began there in the 1920s.

Does tea tree oil go off?

Yes. Exposure to air, light and heat oxidises the oil, which makes skin reactions more likely. Store it in a cool, dark place with the lid on tightly.

Safety

For external use only. Do not swallow. Patch test before use and avoid contact with eyes, ears and broken skin. Discontinue if irritation occurs. Keep away from children and pets.
