How it works
Evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) is a wildflower whose tiny seeds are cold-pressed to make a pale yellow oil. It is used both as a capsule supplement and in skin care.
The oil is rich in linoleic acid, an essential omega-6 fatty acid, and contains about 8 to 10 percent gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). The body can make GLA from linoleic acid using an enzyme called delta-6-desaturase, but this step can be slow. Once absorbed, GLA is converted to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid, which is a building block for hormone-like messengers called prostaglandins (series 1) that help regulate inflammatory balance. Like other oils, it is absorbed best with a meal containing fat. In skin care, linoleic acid is a component of the skin's barrier lipids. Evening primrose oil has a long history of traditional use (NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health).

Fatty acid supplements usually need a few weeks of regular use, and some people use them for around three months before judging the effect. Follow the directions on the label.
