Gentle support for men's everyday wellbeing.

Looking after your health as the years go by? Did you know saw palmetto berries come from a hardy palm native to the south-eastern United States? It may help support healthy prostate function in men.

Saw Palmetto Nettle Root Forumla comes in a pack of 60 Softgels.

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a small palm native to the south-eastern United States. Its berries were traditionally used by Native American peoples as a food and tonic, and today the berry extract is a popular herbal supplement. Men often use it to support urinary comfort and prostate health as they get older, and it is also used in hair care products. Saw palmetto is normally taken as a lipid-rich berry extract in capsule form.

The science behind it

Saw palmetto berries are rich in fatty acids such as lauric, oleic and myristic acid, along with plant sterols including beta-sitosterol. Most extracts are made with supercritical CO2 or hexane, which pulls out the fat-soluble components. Many are standardised to 85 to 95 per cent fatty acids and sterols.

The leading theory is that these compounds may gently inhibit the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT has an influence on prostate tissue and on hair follicles. Saw palmetto may also have a mild effect on inflammatory pathways and on hormone receptors in the tissue.

Human results are mixed. A 2012 Cochrane review of 32 trials did not find a clear benefit over placebo for urinary symptoms, while some other trials, particularly with standardised lipid extracts, have reported improvements in night-time urination and flow. Differences in extract type, dose and trial length probably explain part of the variation.

  • Choose a standardised lipid extract for the best-studied form.
  • Take with a meal to improve absorption of the fats.
  • Allow 8 to 12 weeks before judging results.

Most studies run for at least 8 to 12 weeks, so it is best to give it a few months of regular use before deciding.

Can women take saw palmetto?

It is sometimes used by women for hair and skin concerns, though research is limited. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
