Gentle marigold care for soft, comfortable skin.

Skin needing some tender care? Did you know calendula is the golden pot marigold, long used in skincare to soften and soothe the look and feel of dry skin? Treat your skin to its gentle touch.

Stress Calm from Boiron comes in a pack of 60 Tabs.

Calendula, also called pot marigold, is a cheerful orange flower that has been grown in cottage gardens for centuries. The petals are rich in golden plant pigments and have long been infused into oils, creams and balms for the skin. Calendula is loved for its gentle nature, which makes it a favourite for dry, sensitive or weather-worn skin, and for families looking for kind, natural skin care.

The science behind it

Calendula officinalis petals contain triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids such as quercetin and isorhamnetin glycosides, and carotenoids including lutein and lycopene, which give the flower its colour. Triterpene esters such as faradiol esters are considered key actives and are often used to standardise extracts.

In laboratory studies, calendula extracts have shown antioxidant activity and have encouraged fibroblast cells, the cells that build new skin tissue, to migrate and multiply. This is the likely reason for its traditional use on minor wounds. Some small human trials have looked at calendula ointment on skin that has been irritated by radiation or on nappy rash, and the results are encouraging though not definitive (see Examine.com and the European Medicines Agency herbal monograph on Calendulae flos).

Calendula is usually prepared as:

  • Infused oil: petals steeped in olive or sunflower oil, which extracts oil-soluble carotenoids and triterpenes.
  • Tea or tincture: water and alcohol extract more flavonoids and saponins, used as a rinse or compress.
  • Creams and balms: convenient for daily use.

Used externally, calendula is generally well tolerated and has a long record of traditional use in Europe.

Common questions

What is calendula good for?

Calendula is traditionally used to soothe dry, irritated or sensitive skin and to support the healing of minor cuts and grazes. It is a common ingredient in gentle balms.

Is calendula the same as marigold?

Calendula officinalis is often called pot marigold. It is different from French or African marigolds (Tagetes), which are grown mainly as garden ornamentals.

Can calendula be used on babies?

Calendula-based creams are popular for gentle baby skin care, but do a patch test first. Check with your pharmacist or doctor for very young babies.

How do you use calendula oil?

Massage a small amount onto clean skin once or twice a day. It also works well as a base for homemade balms.

Can I drink calendula tea?

Calendula petals have a traditional use as a tea, and the flavour is mild and slightly bitter. Check with a health professional if you are pregnant or on medication.

How long does calendula take to work?

Skin comfort is often noticed within days of regular use. Minor skin concerns that persist should be checked by a health professional.

Safety

Avoid if you are allergic to daisy family plants (ragweed, chamomile, arnica); patch test before use. Avoid taking by mouth in pregnancy. Seek advice before use on deep wounds or persistent skin concerns.
