Antioxidant care for skin from the inside or out.

Skin feeling dry or tired? Did you know vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant found in nuts, seeds and plant oils? It may help support healthy skin and protect cells from everyday free radical damage.

Vitamin E Mixed D-Alpha from Solgar gives you 670mg per serving.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that works as an antioxidant, helping protect the fats in your cell membranes from everyday oxidative stress. It is found in nuts, seeds, vegetable oils and leafy greens, and it is a long-time favourite in skin care for its softening, protective feel. Vitamin E is not one compound but a family of eight, the tocopherols and tocotrienols. Supplements and skin products usually contain alpha-tocopherol, in natural or synthetic form.

Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it

Vitamin E's main job is to sit in cell membranes and neutralise free radicals before they damage the fats around them. Once it has done so, vitamin E is itself used up, and it can be recycled back to its active form with the help of vitamin C. This partnership is the reason the two are often paired.

The eight forms differ in structure:

  • Tocopherols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta) have a saturated tail.
  • Tocotrienols have an unsaturated tail, which lets them move more easily through cell membranes. They are studied separately.

Alpha-tocopherol is the form the liver preferentially keeps in the blood, using a protein called the alpha-tocopherol transfer protein. Natural vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol) is better retained than synthetic (dl-alpha-tocopherol), and is roughly 1.5 times as potent per milligram. Mixed tocopherols supply the other forms as well.

Because vitamin E is fat-soluble, it is best absorbed with a meal containing some fat. True deficiency is rare and linked to fat malabsorption. On the skin, vitamin E is absorbed into the outer layer and helps hold moisture. See the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements vitamin E fact sheet and the NHMRC Nutrient Reference Values.

Common questions

What is vitamin E good for?

It works as an antioxidant that helps protect your cells, and it supports skin health. It is found in many foods and in skin care products.

What is the difference between natural and synthetic vitamin E?

Natural vitamin E (d-alpha) is more efficiently kept by the body than synthetic (dl-alpha). On labels, natural forms start with d- and synthetic with dl-.

When should I take vitamin E?

With a meal that contains some healthy fat, such as nuts, avocado or olive oil, to help absorption.

Can I put vitamin E oil on my face?

Many people do, usually in a blend or a cream. Pure oil is very rich and can feel heavy or cause breakouts in some people, so patch test first.

Which foods are rich in vitamin E?

Almonds, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, wheat germ oil, olive oil, spinach and avocado.

Should vitamin E be taken with vitamin C?

They work well together. Vitamin C helps recycle vitamin E after it has acted as an antioxidant.

Safety

High doses may increase bleeding risk and can interact with blood thinning medicines such as warfarin, so speak to your healthcare professional before use if you take them or are having surgery. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Patch test skin products.
