Move with ease again.

Stiff when you first get moving? Did you know glucosamine is a natural compound your body makes and is found in healthy cartilage? It may help support joint comfort and flexibility.

Triple Strength Glucosamine from Solgar comes in a pack of 120 Tabs.

Glucosamine is a natural compound made from glucose and an amino acid. Your body produces it and uses it to build glycosaminoglycans, the long sugar chains that give cartilage its cushioning, spongy quality. Production tends to slow with age, and daily wear and tear on joints adds up over the years. Glucosamine supplements, usually made from shellfish shells or fermented corn, are among the most widely used joint-support ingredients in Australia.

Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it

Glucosamine is an amino sugar. In the body it is made from glucose and glutamine by an enzyme called glutamine-fructose-6-phosphate amidotransferase. It then becomes a raw material for glycosaminoglycans such as hyaluronic acid, keratan sulfate and heparan sulfate, which attract and hold water in cartilage. That water is what lets cartilage absorb shock.

Supplements come in two main forms. Glucosamine sulfate is the form used in most European clinical trials, and it provides sulfate, which is also needed to build cartilage. Glucosamine hydrochloride supplies more glucosamine by weight but no sulfate. Oral glucosamine is well absorbed, and studies suggest it reaches joint fluid in small amounts. Once in cartilage cells it may help support the production of proteoglycans and influence enzymes involved in normal tissue turnover.

Evidence is mixed. The large GAIT trial (Clegg et al., New England Journal of Medicine, 2006) found little overall benefit, while a number of trials of the crystalline sulfate form have reported improvements in joint comfort. A Cochrane review (2005) also concluded that product type and quality matter. Glucosamine is often combined with chondroitin, MSM or turmeric, and works best alongside exercise and healthy body weight. It usually takes several weeks of regular use before any change is noticed.

Common questions

What is glucosamine?

Glucosamine is a natural amino sugar found in cartilage and the fluid around joints. Your body makes it, and supplements provide extra to help support joint health.

What is the difference between glucosamine sulfate and glucosamine hydrochloride?

Glucosamine sulfate includes sulfate, a mineral that cartilage also uses, and has been used in most clinical trials. Hydrochloride is more concentrated but lacks sulfate. Both are widely used.

How long does glucosamine take to work?

Plan on at least six to eight weeks of daily use. Joint studies commonly run for three months or more.

When is the best time to take glucosamine?

Take it with food to reduce the chance of stomach upset. Splitting the dose across the day is fine.

Is glucosamine from shellfish safe if I have an allergy?

Shellfish allergy is usually to the flesh, not the shell, but some people react. Choose a vegetarian glucosamine from fermented corn if you are concerned, and ask your practitioner.

Can I take glucosamine with chondroitin?

Yes, they are commonly combined, as both are found in normal cartilage. Some people also add MSM or turmeric.

Safety

Check labelling if you have a shellfish allergy, or choose a vegetarian source. May affect blood glucose in some people, and may interact with warfarin, so monitor if you take it. Use caution with asthma or glaucoma, and speak to your healthcare professional if pregnant or breastfeeding.
