How it works
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a glossy, woody mushroom used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. Supplements are made from the fruiting body, the mycelium or both, usually as a dried powder or extract.
Reishi contains beta-glucans, which are long-chain carbohydrates from the fungal cell wall, and bitter triterpenes called ganoderic acids. Beta-glucans are not digested in the small intestine. Instead they interact with receptors on immune cells in the gut lining, and gut bacteria may ferment some of them. Triterpenes are fat-soluble, so they are absorbed in small amounts and then processed by the liver. Mushroom cell walls are made of tough chitin, so hot water or alcohol extracts release more of these compounds than raw powder does. Human research is still limited and varies in quality. Reishi is traditionally used in Chinese medicine as a tonic (Traditional Chinese Medicine texts).

Common questions
What does reishi taste like?
Reishi is quite bitter and earthy, which is why many people take it as capsules or blend powder into coffee, cocoa or soup. Extracts are often easier to take than plain powder.
How long does reishi take to work?
It is usually taken daily for several weeks rather than as a one-off dose. Everyone responds differently, so follow the directions on your product and check in with your health professional if unsure.
Safety
Reishi may increase bleeding risk, so avoid it if you take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder, and stop before surgery. Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Speak to your health professional if you take blood pressure or immune-modulating medicines.
