How it works
The B-complex is a group of eight water-soluble vitamins: B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folate) and B12 (cobalamin). They work as coenzymes, helping enzymes release energy from carbohydrates, fats and proteins, and supporting the making of DNA, red blood cells and neurotransmitters.
B vitamins are absorbed mainly in the small intestine. Because they are water soluble, the body stores most of them only briefly (B12 is the exception) and excess is passed in urine, so regular intake is needed. This is also why urine may look bright yellow after taking a B-complex, which is harmless and due to riboflavin. Some formulas use active forms such as methylfolate or methylcobalamin. Needs may be higher with a restricted diet, high alcohol intake or periods of stress (see NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheets on B vitamins).
What people use it for
- Helps support energy production and metabolism
- Helps maintain a healthy nervous system
- Helps relieve tiredness when dietary intake is inadequate
- Helps support normal red blood cell formation
- Helps maintain healthy skin, hair and mucous membranes
Common questions
When is the best time to take a B-complex?
Most people take it in the morning with breakfast. B vitamins are involved in energy metabolism, and some people find them mildly stimulating later in the day. Taking them with food also helps avoid nausea.
Why does a B-complex turn urine bright yellow?
That is caused by riboflavin (vitamin B2), which is naturally fluorescent and is passed out in urine when you have more than your body needs. It is harmless.
Safety
Taking high amounts of vitamin B6 over a long period may affect nerve function, so do not exceed the label directions. Check with your healthcare professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking prescription medication.
