Nature's red powerhouse antioxidant.

Want to add strong antioxidant support? Did you know astaxanthin is the red pigment that gives salmon and flamingos their colour? It may help support skin, eye and muscle health.

Astaxanthin from Solgar gives you 10mg per serving. Each pack has 30 Softgels.

Astaxanthin is a vivid red pigment made by the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. It gives salmon, krill and flamingos their pink colour. It belongs to the carotenoid family, the same group as beta-carotene, but behaves very differently in the body. Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant that fits into cell membranes. People take it to support skin health, eye comfort and recovery from exercise, and to help protect cells from everyday oxidative stress.

The science behind it

Astaxanthin has a long chain with a ring on each end, and those rings carry oxygen groups. This structure lets it span the entire cell membrane, neutralising free radicals both inside and outside the membrane. Beta-carotene, by contrast, sits only within the membrane. Laboratory studies show astaxanthin is a very strong quencher of singlet oxygen, a reactive molecule generated by light.

Natural astaxanthin from Haematococcus algae is mostly esterified and the form most used in research. Synthetic astaxanthin, made for the aquaculture industry, has a different mix of isomers. Choose products that state the source.

Absorption is fat-dependent: astaxanthin is fat-soluble, so a meal with some fat improves uptake notably. It builds up in skin, the retina and muscle over weeks.

Human studies are mostly small. Trials in Japan and Europe, using around 4 to 12 mg a day for 8 to 16 weeks, reported improvements in skin moisture, wrinkle appearance and eye fatigue (see work by Tominaga and colleagues, 2012, Acta Biochimica Polonica; and Ito and colleagues, 2018, Nutrients). Trials for exercise performance have been mixed. Astaxanthin may also give a slight skin tone change in some people. The NIH and Examine.com both describe the evidence as promising but limited.

Common questions

What does astaxanthin do?

It is a strong antioxidant. People take it for skin, eye and muscle support.

Is astaxanthin better than vitamin C or E?

Laboratory tests show it has stronger antioxidant activity than some vitamins, but this does not directly mean better results in people. They work in different ways and can be taken together.

When should I take astaxanthin?

With your largest meal, as it is fat-soluble and absorbed best with dietary fat.

How long does astaxanthin take to work?

It builds up in tissues, so studies usually run for 8 to 16 weeks.

Where does astaxanthin come from?

Natural astaxanthin is made by the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. It is also found in salmon, trout, shrimp and krill.

Can astaxanthin replace sunscreen?

No. Astaxanthin may support the skin from within, but you still need sun protection.

Safety

Generally well tolerated. May slightly lower blood pressure or affect hormone-related medicines, so speak to your healthcare professional if you take blood pressure or hormone medicines. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless advised. May cause a mild orange tint to stools.
