Rich, real chocolate flavour with a feel-good ritual.
Craving something rich and chocolatey? Did you know raw cacao is the unprocessed seed of the cacao tree and naturally contains magnesium and plant polyphenols? Make your next hot drink a cacao ritual.
Cacao comes from the seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree, whose botanical name means 'food of the gods'. Ancient Mesoamerican cultures prepared it as a ceremonial drink. Raw cacao, made by cold-pressing the beans, keeps more of its natural plant compounds than most processed chocolate. It is rich in flavanols, magnesium and gentle stimulants, and is enjoyed in drinks, powders and bars as a mood-lifting treat.

The science behind it
Cacao is among the richest natural sources of flavanols, a type of polyphenol that includes epicatechin and catechin. Flavanols appear to boost nitric oxide production in the cells lining blood vessels, helping vessels relax and supporting healthy blood flow. A well-known review of cocoa flavanols (Cochrane review, 2017) found small improvements in circulation markers.
Theobromine and caffeine. Cacao's main stimulant is theobromine, which is milder and longer lasting than caffeine, with less jitteriness. It also contains small amounts of caffeine, phenylethylamine and anandamide-like compounds, which may add to its mood-lifting reputation.
Minerals. Cacao is one of the richest plant sources of magnesium, and also supplies iron, copper, manganese and zinc.
Raw vs cocoa vs chocolate. Raw cacao is made from cold-pressed beans and retains the most flavanols. Dutch-processed or alkalised cocoa is treated to reduce bitterness but loses many flavanols. Milk chocolate has little cacao and added sugar.
Bitterness. The bitter taste comes from the flavanols, so a strong taste is often a sign of high polyphenol content.
Choose ethically sourced cacao. Because cacao can absorb cadmium from soil, reputable sourcing and testing are worthwhile.

Common questions
What is the difference between cacao and cocoa?
Cacao usually refers to raw, minimally processed beans, nibs or powder. Cocoa is typically roasted at higher temperatures and often alkalised, which reduces flavanols.
Is cacao good for you?
Raw cacao is a rich source of flavanols, magnesium and iron, and can be a nourishing part of a balanced diet. Choosing unsweetened cacao keeps the sugar low.
Does cacao contain caffeine?
It contains a small amount, along with more theobromine, a milder stimulant. Most people find cacao gentler than coffee.
When is the best time to have cacao?
Morning or early afternoon is ideal if you are sensitive to stimulants. Some people find it fine in the evening.
How much cacao should I have a day?
Many people enjoy one to two tablespoons of powder or a small handful of nibs. Start with a little and see how you feel.
Is cacao safe for dogs?
No. Cacao and chocolate contain theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and cats. Keep it well out of reach of pets.
Safety
Cacao contains caffeine and theobromine, so people sensitive to stimulants should limit their intake. It may interact with MAOI antidepressants, stimulants and some other medicines. It is toxic to pets. Speak to your healthcare professional if you are pregnant or have migraines.
