Sea Salt Texturizing Spritz

Mineral-rich flavour, naturally.

Ready to upgrade your salt? Did you know unrefined mineral salts keep the trace minerals naturally present in their source, from ancient seabeds or mountains? Season your meals with something more interesting.

Salt is essential for life, and not all salts are the same. Himalayan salt is mined from ancient deposits in Pakistan and gets its pink colour from iron minerals. Celtic and other sea salts are harvested by evaporating seawater, often leaving them slightly damp with a mild flavour. These salts are less refined than table salt and contain traces of other minerals, which many people enjoy for taste and texture.

The science behind it

Salt is sodium chloride (NaCl), and most salts are around 97 to 99 percent sodium chloride. Sodium is the main positive ion in fluid outside cells, and chloride is the main negative ion. Together they regulate water balance, nerve impulses and muscle contraction, and sodium also helps transport glucose and amino acids.

Trace minerals. Himalayan salt contains small amounts of potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron, which is responsible for the pink hue. Celtic salt retains magnesium and other minerals from seawater. However, the amounts are very small. You would need to eat unrealistic quantities of salt to meaningfully raise your intake of these minerals, so the main nutritional contribution is still sodium (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).

Iodine. Unlike iodised table salt, most Himalayan and sea salts contain little natural iodine. People who rely only on these salts may need iodine from seafood, dairy, eggs or iodised salt, particularly if they are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Processing. Sea salt is produced by solar evaporation. Rock salt is mined and crushed. Table salt is refined, and typically has anti-caking agents added. Different crystal sizes affect how salty a pinch tastes by volume, although sodium content by weight is similar.

Most Australians already eat more sodium than recommended, so salt is best used in moderation.

Common questions

Is Himalayan salt healthier than regular salt?

It contains tiny traces of minerals and fewer additives, but the amounts are very small. It is still mostly sodium chloride and should be used in moderation.

What is Celtic sea salt?

It is a grey, slightly moist sea salt traditionally harvested from the coast of Brittany. It keeps more magnesium and trace minerals than refined salt.

Does Himalayan salt contain iodine?

Usually very little. If you use only unrefined salts, make sure you get iodine from other foods.

Why is Himalayan salt pink?

Its colour comes from trace iron oxide and other minerals.

Can I use mineral salt in the bath?

Yes. Dissolve it in warm water for a relaxing soak, and rinse the skin afterwards if it feels dry.

How much salt is okay each day?

Australian guidelines suggest keeping sodium to about 2,000 mg a day, or roughly 5 g of salt. Most people eat more than this.

Safety

Most Australians already consume more sodium than recommended. People who have been advised to limit sodium, or who take blood pressure or kidney-related medicines, should follow their doctor's guidance. Keep salt-based bath and cleaning products away from the eyes and out of reach of children.
