The science behind it

Sea moss usually refers to Chondrus crispus (Irish moss) or Gracilaria species. The main component is a family of sulphated polysaccharides: carrageenans in Chondrus and agar-like galactans in Gracilaria. These form a thick gel in water, which is why sea moss is used as a natural thickener.

The gel is a soluble, fermentable fibre. In the gut it can bind water, soften stools and be fermented by gut bacteria into short-chain fatty acids. Seaweed polysaccharides also act as demulcents, coating irritated mucous membranes, which explains its traditional use for the throat.

Minerals. Sea moss accumulates iodine, magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron and zinc from seawater. Iodine is needed to make thyroid hormones that regulate metabolism, but the content varies widely between batches, species and growing conditions. A small amount can supply much of the daily requirement, and some products are very high (Food Standards Australia New Zealand).

Quality. Seaweeds can also take up unwanted elements from the water, so source and testing matter. Wildcrafted sea moss and farmed varieties differ in colour and nutrient profile, and neither is automatically superior.

Marketing claims about sea moss providing 92 minerals are not backed by evidence.

What does sea moss taste like?

Properly prepared gel is mild, with a faint ocean note. It blends easily into smoothies, soups and desserts.

How much sea moss should I take?

Follow the label. Because it is rich in iodine, more is not better, and consistent small amounts are best.

Does sea moss really contain 92 minerals?

How do I use sea moss gel?

Stir it into smoothies, tea, soups or overnight oats. Keep homemade or opened gel refrigerated.

Is sea moss the same as seaweed?

Sea moss is a type of seaweed. Different seaweeds have different nutrient profiles.

Safety

Sea moss is high in iodine. Seek advice before use if you have a thyroid condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take thyroid medicines or blood thinners. Excess iodine may be a problem for some. Avoid if you have a seafood or seaweed allergy.
