How it works

Carrier oils are plant oils, pressed from nuts, seeds or fruit, that are used to moisturise skin and to dilute essential oils. They are made of triglycerides, which are fatty acids attached to glycerin, along with small amounts of vitamin E, phytosterols and other plant compounds.

The fatty acid mix explains how each oil feels. Jojoba is technically a liquid wax ester, very close to the skin's own sebum, so it absorbs well and feels light. Argan is rich in oleic and linoleic acid and vitamin E, giving a silky, nourishing feel. Rosehip oil is high in linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids and has a natural amber tint from carotenoids. It is a popular choice for facial skin.

Body oils act as emollients and light occlusives. Applied to damp skin after a shower, they trap water on the surface and leave skin looking glossy and supple. They also make an ideal base for massage.

What people use it for

  • Moisturises and softens skin.
  • Leaves skin looking glowing and feeling supple.
  • Nourishes with plant fatty acids and natural vitamin E.
  • A gentle base oil for massage and aromatherapy blends.
  • Can be used on the body, face, hands and cuticles.

Common questions

Which carrier oil is best for my skin?

It depends on your skin. Jojoba and rosehip tend to suit oily or combination skin as they are light, while argan and sweet almond oil suit normal to dry skin. Try a small amount first and see how your skin feels after a few days.

How do I use body oil?

Apply a few drops to damp skin straight after a shower and massage in until absorbed. A little goes a long way. Wait a moment before dressing, as some oils can mark clothing.

Safety

For external use only. Patch test before first use, especially if you have nut allergies, as some oils are nut-derived. Avoid contact with eyes and stop use if irritation occurs.
