The science behind it

Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) is a stilbene made by plants in response to stress, such as fungal attack or UV exposure. It exists in trans and cis forms, and trans-resveratrol is the more active and stable form.

In laboratory research, resveratrol activates sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) and AMPK, enzymes involved in cellular energy sensing, and it neutralises free radicals. It also supports nitric oxide production, which relaxes blood vessels, and influences inflammatory pathways like NF-kB.

Bioavailability challenge. Resveratrol is absorbed well from the gut, but the liver and intestinal lining rapidly convert it to sulphate and glucuronide conjugates, so little free resveratrol circulates. Its half-life is short at about 1 to 3 hours.

Boosting absorption. Taking resveratrol with a meal containing fat can improve uptake. Micronised and liposomal forms are marketed to improve it, and combining it with piperine from black pepper has been studied.

Evidence. Many findings come from cell and animal research. Human studies are smaller and give mixed results, so the true effects in people are still being clarified (Examine.com). The amount in a glass of red wine is only a small fraction of supplement doses.

Common questions

What is resveratrol?

It is a plant polyphenol found in red grape skins, berries and peanuts. It has antioxidant properties and is widely studied.

Is resveratrol in red wine enough?

Red wine contains only small amounts. You would need an unrealistic quantity to match a supplement, and alcohol brings its own downsides.

What is trans-resveratrol?

It is the biologically active form. Look for products that specify trans-resveratrol.

When is the best time to take resveratrol?

Take it with a meal that includes healthy fats, as this may help absorption.

How long does resveratrol take to work?

Effects are subtle and long-term. Studies typically run 4 to 12 weeks or longer.

Can I take resveratrol with CoQ10 or NMN?

These are commonly combined in healthy ageing formulas. Check with a professional if you take regular medicines.

Safety

Resveratrol may have mild blood-thinning properties and can interact with anticoagulants, antiplatelet medicines and medicines processed by the liver. Avoid if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and speak to your doctor before use with hormone-sensitive conditions. Stop before planned surgery.
